    87 johnson 30 throttle help

Sounds like a new thread.... (glad you got the clip issue resolved)

    grommet sleeve

Is your 115 a 20" model? (thinking maybe the 60 degree model didn't come with a 20" shaft?)

    Johnson Looper 130 Temperature Variation

got to post the compression numbers -- "adequate" is a judgment call, and may be disagreement. The port side temp is too high (imo) -- think you need to get it in the water to test, as muffs are not good for tuning or checking cooling system.

Correct carb for 9.9 by serial number

Yeah, but nonetheless.... Check that number against carb model numbers you might find online. Try the "shop" section here at iBoats. (btw You want a model number, not a serial number.)

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

Well, water pump function is probably as important as anything else, or more so. The oem impeller for your motor is 777129. The key is 323950, shown here: http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0323950 The key is kind of an odd duck, and I'm not sure what you came up...

    Hard start

If the primer is working, gas is getting to the cylinders. It is an easy matter to check compression and spark -- can buy an adjustable open air spark tester cheaply at an auto parts store, and buy/borrow/rent a compression tester there too. I would start there. It has to crank over at...

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

You have determined that the water pipe is not blocked. If water was gushing down from the powerhead area, you also know that water is going through the powerhead. So it would appear you have to determine why the water pump is not moving water to and through the powerhead. That is the job of...

Correct carb for 9.9 by serial number

Carb part numbers are usually on metal tags. You may be looking at a component part number. See if the number matches anything in a parts blow up for an '86. (carb i.d. not at easy as it sounds, imo).

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

If the intake is OK, think you need to revisit the water pump work. The key for the impeller may have been dislodged, or perhaps the water tube was not inserted in the grommet down there (or the grommet is faulty).

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

....But don't fire it up until the water issue is solved. For compression test, remove plugs. Hook up the tester, and crank until the needle stops moving (five to ten seconds, maybe). Record the finding and move to the other cylinder. Check the water intake in the lower unit -- mud, seaweed...

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

been there, done that. For future reference -- One of those quick disconnects (male end) helps to step down the diameters. But probably still need the duct tape.

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

Don't know exactly how you have a hose attached, but sounds like water pressure hasn't pushed out the blockage yet. Water subsequently runs back out the inlet point. Air isn't real useful for leak or blockage diagnosis -- maybe cigar smoke.

    Final Straw.

Is the throttle cable slipping (remote cable)? Don't mean to be insulting, but often an overlooked simple issue. Is spark strong and consistent? You can check for dropped spark (i.e., dropped cylinder) using a timing light -- no flash, no spark. Use an open air adjustable tester and measure...

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

If I understood correctly, it sounds like the water tube (inlet) is blocked at the powerhead (exhaust housing adaptor). This is not unheard of, as the grommet gets contorted and blocks water flow. It may be possible to remove the water tube from the bottom, so wait for suggestions on that. I...

    Tachometer

Failure of a rectifier (rectifier/regulator, if applicable) often means that the tach won't work. Is the battery charging? An interesting sidelight with a failed water-cooled regulator (again if applicable) is a potential engine fire, so worth checking.

    1984 50hp Evinrude Overheating

The worrisome issue is that the motor got very hot. 160F or over is an overheating situation (too hot to touch for most folks), 120-140 is normal. Depends on conditions. When you ran water up the water tube, did it exit down the leg (i.e., out the exhaust). Check the water intake at the...

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

^^agree. Might try to duplicate the movement by hand, starting with the flywheel (i.e., everything assembled). Then remove the flywheel and see if you can get any crankshaft movement -- repeat on down to (including) the armature support plate. If no movement of the crankshaft, work back up...

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

Dunno. Doesn't sound right. Might be an issue with the crankshaft bearing. Perhaps could install bearing from the donor motor. Check driver coil and stator placement(s), and make sure they are secure on the armature plate and that the armature support plate is secured.

    Idles to fast

agree. standard method is to disconnect the remote cable, and set the idle at the motor. Then reattach the cable to match the motor setting.
