    Fuel starvation conundrum

I think you’re right. The carb on the boat had been run on the E0 94 octane fuel for about 3 hrs and I had to winterize it due to the temps starting to drop into the 30s here at night. I have to figure out what to do with the fuel. Over the winter I want to replace the rest of the fuel lines &...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

No that's a big difference, the fuel in the main tank is mid range pump gas E-10 (89 AKI) the fuel in the portable tank is E-0 94 octane and was fresh, just bought it in Sept when I was doing the tests. Only one gas station around here sells it, and it's like $7.50 a gallon, I wanted to try it...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I've been running this engine on 89 pump octane fuel for 20+ years with no problems like this one, except back in 2004, and that was the last time the anti siphon valve was replaced. In fact it says to use 89 AKI octane right on the flame arrestor....and the #s on our road gas pumps, are AKI...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Ok tested the old pick up tube/anti siphon valve & fuel line. Pulled a vacuum of 10”hg held steady for 2 hrs. Also tested under pressure 10 psi with soapy water on all connections and no bubbles no apparat leaks. What say you I boaters? Back to the bad fuel idea? Only other thing I can think of...

Pink Super Tech (Walmart) -50 RV and Marine ok for engine?? I always thought NO...??

Always go by the lowest temp expected in your area. If it's zero, then you want -100 because both the -50 and -60 solidify but don't expand at approx zero degrees. I don't want anything that gets solidified in a cast iron engine. -100 stays liquid down to -55*F. I also will mix up my own Sierra...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I've heard of those causing trouble, the original one was just an aluminum tube screwed into the square fitting, no screen. The one I replaced it with (Moeller) also has no screen. When I took it apart, it was completely clean, no debris in the tube or anti siphon valve. Bottom of tank was clean...

Do you have a DIY vacuum / pressure tester?

Not DIY but I’ve bought both a pressure and vacuum tester a few years ago and am using it now to check for leaks in my old fuel line/fuel pick up tube….

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Ya and yes. My QJet just has a screen in the fuel inlet that was replaced when I rebuilt it this summer. Gonna do a pressure test and see what that shows.

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Update: vacuum test didn't hold over time but I'm not sure that's such a valid test. I am going to do a pressure test with soapy water to see if there are any leaks in the tube, anti siphon valve and old fuel line. for testing the fuel, I think I'll siphon out a gallon or 2 and see how it runs...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I think the same thing happens to automotive OEMs with their suppliers. When the OEMs put price pressure on them they look for other sources. I get my stuff from a marine supplier who supplies all the bigger boatyards in my area. Cheaper than West Marine and the guy knows everything! Going to...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Yep I had done that several years earlier. All the old hoses on this boat are gonna get replaced.

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Still looking for the smoking gun.... I rigged this up to test the old fuel pick up tube and anti-siphon valve for vacuum leaks, it's holding at -11.5"hg, I left it hooked up in the garage and will go out later to see if it holds or not. A section of the old fuel line is on the end with the...

    Thermostat GLM13230 OEM # 87290A4

an old school radiator thermometer is great for checking a 'stat in a pot of water....I rigged up a length of coat hanger wire to hold the stat and the thermometer off the bottom of the pot....

    Fuel starvation conundrum

the ones in this boat are dried out & stiff but not crumbling but i do plan to replace them... one last thing I noticed...the ID of the old fuel supply hose to the engine (3/8") seems bigger than on a new section of hose of the same size.....wondering if they could have been sucking in air even...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Last question for my iboats friends…anybody know if fuel can be tested to tell if it is still usable or not? Blackstone Labs does offer a test kit but it’s expensive….

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I replaced the one from the tank to the fuel filter but I know the fill & vent should be done too…thank goodness the tank appears to be in pretty good shape…

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Good thought! I checked the vent, I think it's clear, who knows with that old fuel line though. I "think" the hoses were original if you can believe. It's a 1988 boat!

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Thought of that but it ran perfect with the test tank. The use of the test tank reduced the possibilities to: Anti siphon (tested good) Pick up tube ((clean no screen tested good but will do more testing) Fuel line, cut in half to check for delamination found none. Fuel (unknown). Only other...
