    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

My preference is to start cold and add heat once the glass is laid up. I’m thinking if the resin were to start warm, it would tend to kick too fast and cooling it down would be too late. I’m using VE resin, so it’s open time is a bit longer than poly resin.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

In other news . . . I have the 4 'transom mating' pieces secured to the transom with a about a 3/32" 'spacer' all around to mimic the fiberglass thickness. (Pics to follow in the AM.) Temperatures barely hit 60˚F today . . . more like 57˚F. I am having to tent the work area after the glass...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yup, it was one of those things . . . asked myself should I cut out one more piece and call it a day . . . Doh 😖

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Some how, I managed to cut one of the pieces wrong. So, I got to practice glassing the Coosa board. . . All set . . . don't do it again 🤪

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Progress Update . . . Lots of measuring and cutting today. I'm into 3 of the Coosa panels . . . Here is what I've cut out so far (highlighted in orange). . . The big top piece (upper right in the picture) took a while to get just right. The other pieces were not too bad . . . lots of...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

I'd be finding the leak first as it may impact the rest of your planned work. I would think you could run the engine on the 'muffs' to determine if the engine is leaking. Keep in mind that when the boat is in the water, the exhaust bellows is full of water as is the lower portion of the...

    Impeller replacement glycerin and grease

Both Volvo and Mercruiser call for their own grease, and it seems each call-out is a different type of grease. I have used a single marine grease for everything with no adverse effect. On impeller case internals if often use dish soap for the initial break-in.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yes . . . lots of bolts. The 'glue' is more of a water-tight sealant. . .

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Sunday was a fun day . . . Patriots football . . . narrowly escaping defeat 🤪 We get there fairly ealry and have the pick of the tailgating spaces . . . . . . Today is back to business, but the weather might have its input on how much gets done . . . . I got some detailed dimensions and...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

It gets worse . . . Would you sell just the engines? (no . . . they don't work without the controls and wiring) I'm a Merc Tech, I know this stuff . . . (no you don't) How many hours? What year? (the listing has all the info) I just need the throttles . . . how much for those? (same price as...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

In other news . . . I got the engine packages listed for sale in a few places. It is a circus out there 🤡 . Once again, I am loosing my faith in humanity.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Weekend Update . . . A belated Happy Halloween to those who partake in the festivities. I will be back at the outboard conversion over the next few days. Some fiberglass supplies arrived yesterday and more stuff is arriving today. I've been cleaning up the engines, outdrives, and other...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Having the transom scooted out the 20" from the bunks is actually helpful in verifying some of the measurements. I got one of those digital protractor thingys so I could measure the various angles. . The transom is 12˚, which I sort of knew from the drawings I got. Mercury recommends a 14˚...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Today I played trailer moving games . . . I want to see if I can get a decent balance point & manageable tongue weight. The boat was about 6" off-center (to port) when we pulled the boat out of the water. So that was the first order of business. Once I got the boat lifted up in the air, I...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The Mercruiser engines new are around $23K each, new SeaCore outdrives are around $10K each, the transom assemblies are around $5K each, the DTS & Axius is hard to say, but figure $10-15K. So all new would be around $90K . . . 20% of new price would be $18K . . . 30% would be $27K. So, I...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I was quoted $10K as a 'trade-in', so I'll be selling myself. I hope to get more than the $20K, but that is what budgets are for (less optimistic).

    Cruiser comparison

I've had surveys done on all 3 of the power boats that I bought over the years. I try to look for surveyors who have a partnership with a marine mechanic, as that makes the process easier. Basically getting it all done at once. I usually search through boating forums for surveyors who have...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

My total budget is $84K factoring in getting $20K for the sale of the Mercruiser engines. Ideally, I'd like to get a wee bit more for the engines, but it is hard to tell.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Budget check . . . Currently at $4,109 vs. my budget line of $6,000 for the engine removal and extension pod construction. More than I thought, but the bulk of the stuff is purchased.
