    Bellows adhesive or not?

Here’s why I wouldn’t do that. For one due to the folds there could be water that wouldn’t drain out but enough to rust the gimble & ujoints. So you might not see a leak but there could be water in there. For another you know how the front edge of the Cobra bellows seals, with the ridge in the...

    Bellows adhesive or not?

There really isn’t any way to know if the bellows is leaking as long as the drive is installed although if it does leak eventually the gimble bearing will get noisy. This to me is one of the essential drawbacks of I/O power packages and why among other reasons I won’t have another. In fact at...

    Water in engine...looking for help

If you have a 12 bolt intake it’s a pre Vortec which was not known for failing intake gaskets & water leaks into the cam valley & oil The 8 bolt (Vortec) was known for failing intake gaskets The change was in 1996 IIRC. Vortec heads have about 25 more HP. If you have the 12 bolt the intake...

5.7 Volvo penta oil drain kit

Leave it as it is and use a proper vacuum pump with a garden hose adapter; I have this same system on my OMC and have been changing oil that way for over 20 years…if you use the right pump & technique it sucks all the oil out of the engine in 5-7 minutes…

    Water in engine...looking for help

Well that’s a mystery for sure…I had water in the oil some years back and that was due to an overheat a few years earlier. Too bad you took it apart already! Is this a pre Vortec or a Vortec engine (12 bolt or 8 bolt intake?) Vortec engines were known for bad intake gaskets which were upgraded...

    Water in engine...looking for help

Yep if the gaskets look good that is the most likely cause is a freeze up. What is odd though is that the manifold has that crack yet there does not seem to be a sign of water in the exhaust ports, no rust there….

Switching from trailering to storing in a saltwater slip... what is a "must do" to protect bravo3?

get ready to suffer with painting that damn thing every year, it is a job I dread more and more and yes, Chris is right, the spray doesn't last, depending on your area for fouling, I have found that brushing on 2 coats lasts the season. And spray the engine oil pan and timing cover with rust...

    engine will not start

try running it off of an outboard fuel tank if it runs fine then it’s either the anti siphon valve, the pick up tube & screen or the vent….

    1995 Crownline 202BR Restore

I'm sure you'll wind up with a far better boat than you started with! That is the main reason to do one of these jobs, unfortunately for me I'm past the age where I'd even consider it. So when this boat is too far gone to justify fixing, it's going to be new or nothing.

    Quadrajet Replacement Options

Cliffs the real deal and has the knowledge and quality parts to get it running well. I was able to do mine with a good cleaning & better quality parts. I recently bought an ultrasonic cleaner big enough for a 4bbl!

Installing the New Version of the Bell Crank With the Grease port

Looks good! I will probably wait till I have to change the shift cable and then see if it will come out of my original pivot housing or if I have to replace it with the spare one I have....

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Sounds good, one more thing that I replaced when I had a similar experience was the water tube grommets in the outdrive, these can melt slightly and distort and then you might not get 100% water flow when the boat is up on plane. The reason being that they are in the path of exhaust water and...

Installing the New Version of the Bell Crank With the Grease port

Ok I also bought that, mine didn't have one being a 1988. HOWEVER....I don't know that I will install it because, I'm not sure that I will be able to get that plug out and also, the next time I have to replace the shift cable, I doubt that the shift cable retaining nut will come out of the pivot...

How Do I Install the New Version U-Joint Bellows?

Is the new version a Volvo Penta part (for the SX)? I bought a new one a year ago as a spare and the OMC OE bellows is the original all rubber type. Before they (Volvo) changed it the bellows for the SX drive, both the Cobra and the SX were the same part IIRC. Not sure if that's what they are...

Help - I sheared off the bolt holding the Shift Lever on the Bell Crank!!

Good work, from every problem, you learn solutions! I haven't had too many problems with the Cobra, despite my salt water use, last spring I had to rebuild both trim rams, the seals started leaking (after 35 years!) and the loop at the end of the ram where it bolts to the drive was really...

5.0 GXi-J fuel pump relay keeps tripping

The amp clamp is a very useful tool to have, the thing you want to think about is not just how many amps the fuel pump draws, but also how many amps the wire is rated for. With fuses and circuit breakers the rating is chosen to protect the wire from overheating and causing a fire. Not sure where...

Help - I sheared off the bolt holding the Shift Lever on the Bell Crank!!

There's pretty much no access to the other end, my thought is if the machinist can't get the bolt out, he could cut the bell crank and pull it out but there isn't much room to get any kind of a cutting tool in there, that's why I advised if that fails, buy a used pivot housing off of ebay. They...

in a pinch with a 5.7 Volvo Penta

Just in case you're considering this, the answers are no and no you need a marine OMC/Volvo style thermostat, 160*, an automotive stat might not fit and uses an opening temp much too high (195*) An auto starter is not ignition protected and is very dangerous in a boat, explosion risk. Only...

Help - I sheared off the bolt holding the Shift Lever on the Bell Crank!!

If you’re sure that the bolt was seated in the recess you could use it as is, the only reason to remove the shift lever on the bell crank is to replace the oring on the bell crank that keeps water out of the shifter bellcrank area.
