What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

Realize what rots wood core boats and rusts vehicles….moisture in the air….the integrity of the wood structure of a wood/glass boat is a Function of the wood used but mostly the quality of workmanship and the storage habits of the owner, as well as sealing any screw holes….

    Bayliner Floor Project

One thing I can add, having been through this fun adventure myself about 18 years ago (like PTSD, I still recoil at the smell of a damp wet boat thinking of the rot happening inside) is that carpet is the DEATH of wood cored boats. After we did the deck/stringers in my '88 Four Winns I took all...

Help - I sheared off the bolt holding the Shift Lever on the Bell Crank!!

Hello I responded to your PM I think that bolt snapped because the end of the bolt, may not have been seated in the recess in the bellcrank so I think you have 3 choices: reverse drill bits remove pivot housing and take it to a machinist for repair replace pivot housing with another one off of...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

All 'glass boats especially from the 80s and 90s before the change over to composite construction not using as much wood. Any boat I didn't know the history of that's of that vintage would be suspect to me. I would not buy it without taking it to my favorite fiberglass guy right here in Long...

    Manifold Change

headless bolts.....take the manifold bolts to a hardware store, buy the same thread pitch bolts but longer, cut the heads off and cut a slot in the end to make it easy to remove with a large screwdriver, makes it MUCH easier.

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

It does suggest that the gelcoat might not be as oxidized or the vinyl won't be as dried out and cracked as it would normally be but a boat that old, exposed to moisture with wood structural members under the 'glass is ALWAYS SUSPECT. And I'm telling you if you are used to working on an aluminum...

    Only 3 Drain Locations?

My brother had a 2020 Chapparal with the Merc 4.5 and this system, it worked fine for the couple of years he had it but between that and the cat converter exhaust, I convinced him to trade it for a similar boat with a Yamaha 4 stroke outboard. Much better for our salt pond. It was moored not far...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

Water in the bilge or not, it may not be a problem, it is very common to have rain water in the bilge because all boat covers leak, it would be pretty rare for it to not leak but if the boat has well placed scuppers, and the deck was built to drain properly, it could be OK. The rest well this...

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

Sure you can do that; here the choke is only really needed at the very beginning and end of the season, for me I’d prefer to have a manual choke just have to find one with a cable long enough for a boat lol!

    Brake woes

Then there’s that massive GM recall on 21-24 models just announced. Seems like they can’t even build a reliable small block V8 any more! It’s like 800,000 -900,000 trucks!

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

If you’re not an accomplished back yard mechanic familiar with old school GM engines and marine propulsion systems (outdrives) this is a very risky venture. You can leave an outboard boat in the salt with the OB tilted up for a long time, people do it here all the time but an I/O, no way...

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

When the choke is closed it essentially creates an additional restriction in the Venturi relative to the throttle plate and that increases the Bernoulli effect which lowers the air pressure in the venturi relative to the air pressure in the float bowl. So more fuel is pushed into the venturi...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

No I’m saying that the boat needs to be pulled out of the water and thoroughly inspected by someone who knows what to look for. It could be salvageable or a complete refit needed which may exceed the value of the boat or anything in between. Was the boat bottom painted before being put in the...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

replacing an outdrive runs into thousands and a transom mount costs about the same plus the engine must be pulled! Boats can live for a long time in salt water but they require yearly maintenance….Ive done it….for 23 years!

    Brake woes

Sometimes with a bad wheel bearing you don't feel the play till you remove the caliper, wire it up so it doesn't hang by the hose, put wheel/tire back on and then check for play with the caliper off. Had this with our '98 Subaru, they were famous for losing wheel bearings. I was shocked at how...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

I had something similar happen back in 2013, the cooling hose popped off right at the P/S cooler so the pump in the outdrive filled the bilge with seawater and the engine overheated of course. Seeing water coming in, but not knowing where it was coming in from, just couldn't see anything, I...

Rebuild my choke to Electric. What with the "holes"

That 1970 Ford had a choke that took forever to warm up, fixing it was how I learned about that system. No electric choke conversions were out there in 1977 or so when I had this car. What I found after thinking it thru & trying a new thermostatic choke spring to no avail….that choke housing has...

Rebuild my choke to Electric. What with the "holes"

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, the tube with the insulation carried hot air up to the choke housing, the one with the rubber tube brought down fresh air from the air cleaner...
