    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Thanks guys. Your support is much appreciated. :) As of last weekend, I acquired an excellent 150HP outboard (on a 4th boat, a bass boat) which will be installed on my test boat. A working engine on a good hull is all I really need. The test boat will become my only, and probably final...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Guys, it absolutely breaks my heart, but it's time for me to let my Chieftain project go. This boat has been my dream since 1997. 😭 I was 62 when I acquired the boat and am 71 now. I just don't have the time, energy, health, help, funding and lifetime left to complete the project. ☹️ I've...

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Ahh... I feel the need for speed! :D My old Winner bass boat clocked 72MPH GPS with me alone and 68 with my big cousin on board. 🚤 🤪

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

I definitely avoid the saltwater motors. Heck, I saw one ad in Key West where the seller stated that his engine was run in freshwater only! :ROFLMAO:

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Thanks Chris. I plan on doing the water pump and a fresh gear oil change anyway, so I'll switch to synthetics. (y) At 71, I remember those old Sinclair commercials about dino oil. 🧓

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Anyway, the XR6 that I bought has been in solid, good service with the prior owner for 13 years. And still many more years before that from the owner he got it from, so, I'm happy with it.

When you say can liner, do you mean the exhaust tube?

Pretty negative comment. Backyard butchery? Can you explain?

Thanks! Sounded awesome in person. I don't know what removing the can and drilling the exhaust mean.

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

I made a 700 mile round trip and bought the XR6 boat. Seller let me start it and it runs great! The seller said the engine exhaust had been "drilled" and the carbs have larger jets. 🤷‍♂️ The whole overall deal was awesome. Nice guy, nice family, nice place, nice little town. The trip home...

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

If I'm able to buy the motor! :sneaky: The seller informed me this morning that he has another buyer showing interest, but low-balled him. I told him that I'd definitely beat the offer if everything works out. The Merc will get mounted on a 1997 Mirrocraft 18' aluminum fish n ski, which is...

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Shouldn't there be a data plate or sticker somewhere with the max RPM listed? I'll pass all this great info on to the seller so that he can figure it out. This motor is several hundred miles away from me, so I definitely want to get it figured out before I travel. Thanks! From the decals...
