1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

I feel for you, my wife us just starting with dimensia issues...not pretty and hard to accept after 50 plus years. Just for your information, I have a 16' Sylvan side console, weight around 1000 plus pounds. I have a 40 hp Merc Classic, the 4 cylinder 2 stroke model, that looks and runs like...

28' Pontoon with 3.0 Mercruiser Prop

If you read my comment, I mentioned performance cases were the exception....55 mph is certainly a performance case ! A pontoon doing 20 mph is not considered high performance by any means. We have numerous pontoons in our area, one guy has a tuition with 3 250hp out boards and yes he has SS...

    Flat tire on haul-out today . . .

That is why I look at my trailer tires before and after each trip. Not hard to notice when a tire is getting low. Sudden blow outs from punctures won't let the sensor show it. Don't get me wrong, the sensors are great tools, but I can count on one finger the number of times they actually...

1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

A good rebuild kit will give you specs for setting the float along with other adjustments. As far as sealing the plugs, if installed properly, no sealant is needed. With low compression, everything needs to be set just right to run correctly.

28' Pontoon with 3.0 Mercruiser Prop

Because the aluminum prop is one third the cost of a SS when the prop is damaged. SS props give little to no performance increase on barges like a pontoon boat. That amount of flex on the aluminum prop is so tiny, you could not measure it ! Now....if someone has deep pockets and enjoys...

1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

If not a complete and thorough rebuild with a factory rebuild kit, then setting each carb to the specs given in the kit, your carbs are not good....spraying carb cleaner all over, usually makes things worse by loosening all the crud and shoving it into the areas you missed. Just cleaning a carb...

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

I taught a lot if my kid's friends back when they were learning. Most of the parents did not have nor know how to drive a stick. I always told my students....if you follow my instructions to the letter, You will be driving a stick within 15 minutes...but ...you have to follow my instructions ...

    Flat tire on haul-out today . . .

If air pressure is that concerning, why not fix any leaks. I check my tires frequently and end up adding air only after long winter storage. During summer boat season tires always within a few lbs. In my wife's Honda, the sensors are always acting up, have had batteries replaced and sensors...

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

About 30 years back, when I was teaching my three kids to drive, there were requirements to get your license. One was driving thru one winter with learners permit...yep they learned how to slide and bring it back out. Second was to learn to drive a stick and start up on a hill. And the third...

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

Those work well for launching in shallow ramps but definitely not suited for highway use !

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

Learning to back up should be your first concern, but if the area is to tight, then first choice would be a front receiver if possible ( can the vehicle handle the weight?). Front hitches are awesome, makes backing a trailer a breeze. Whenever you shorten the distance between ball and axle...

    1979 Starcraft American Offshore 22’

Before starting any work....check carefully the wood skeleton for dry rot. At the boats age, it is highly probable the wood is rotted and needs replaced. For your safety and your passengers, do a thorough test of that wood structure.

Reminder to check gear before towing.

Years back, I had an open skiff with no storage either. Picked up a couple old coolers at garage sales, added a couple vents and bungee corded them to the bench seats. Kept stuff in place while boat was underway and nothing flew out on the highway. Could easily be moved into another position if...

2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

Did you blow compressed air thru all the small holes and passages ? Some are barely needle size so a piece of wire needs pushed thru. Just soaking won't clean out the tiny places. Also ..you should have bought a factory rebuild kit to replace all the gaskets, needle and seat for the float...

Reminder to check gear before towing.

Learned my lesson in my early days of boating. Just had new canvass made for my center console, thought it was folded and stored away and would not blow out. Boy was I wrong.....back then it was well over 500 bucks gone in the wind....actually !! Now everything is stored in lockers or have...

    What Thrust Size Trolling Motor?

Interesting, never had the opportunity to fish or control a boat in a current that strong. Looks to be a lot of work and skill needed to make it work.
