1995 Larson 174 SEI Complete Rebuild

My 174 SEI's first transom layer goes to completely down to the bottom of the transom/bilge, tabbed in completely with a hole drilled for the drain thru both layers. Like Frisco Boaters' "Big Mistake". The second, forward layer is set up, but I don't know why. See pic below. I mention this...

How bad will this turn out?

Last week I helped my bud winterize his 42' Bluewater Coastal Cruiser. The marina took care of the rest.....until yesterday. Apparently a fork truck bumped into a jack stand, or the boat itself. The marina is bringing in their insurance assessor. Anyone care to compile a damage report guess...

How to improve marine VHF SWR?

When we bought our boat 22 yrs. ago, before cell phone coverage improved to today's stds, I bought a Shakespeare SE2510 VHF radio. I wasn't transmitting clearly, or at all according to my boating friends. I sent it back to Shakespeare who returned it as OK. I bought a SWR meter, and the ratio...

OAT + Ethylene Glycol screw up

I didn't know about OAT coolants until I read about them in a Merc. Sterndrive post. And after I topped off my OAT sealed reservoir system in my '16 Cherokee 2.4L with the Ethylene Glycol. I had a warranty coolant hose leak. Maybe 12-16 oz. in the car's 6-8 qt (?) OAT system. Yep, it said OAT...

    Reed switch fuel sender.

I'm helping my bud shake down a nonfunctional fuel gage and we determined the sender is bad. I changed from a float arm to a Moeller reed switch and it works great, so I suggested he get one. My 9" tank took an 8" sender per Moeller. Their design keeps the float 1" off the bottom of the tank...

Back flushing '93 Merc 75 hp?

This is on behalf of my neighbneighbor. He dug mud and lost his witness water pee stream. He installed a new impeller, but still has no stream. I suspect a clogged cooling jacket. Muffs won't clear it. Is there a flush port in his powerhead?

    Dead man lanyard connection?

My lanyard has been in my seat pocket for nearly 22 yrs. IA DNR will now fine me for operating solo w/o it. Not a bad idea anyway. I can shim a gear set to zero, but I'll be darned if l can remember how to hook up @ the kill switch. Any pics or help?

    Forum question: Sent Messages

I've noticed that many of my sent private messages don't show up in my "Sent" folder. I use the @ - contributor name. I can understand why some may be hiding behind the couch when I message, but I want to be sure I'm following the correct process. (??)

    Thunderbolt IV ==> Thunderbolt V?

So I'm wasting my Sat. afternoon time pipe dreaming, and probably will be wasting some of your time too. I'm wondering if my '96 4.3LX could be converted from it's Thunderbolt IV to a V. Assuming the graybeards don't answer "Nope", I have questions. First mine is working fine, and hopefully...

807962A15 to new 87-8M0052936 plunger shift cut-out switch conversion?

On behalf of my penny-wise, pound-foolish boating bud. His old roller arm cut-out switch is bad, and he shifts w/o the cut-out function because he is too cheap the buy the $116 807962A15 riveted old switch/plate assy. I keep telling him he is in for big repair$ if he doesn't fix that function...

Merc. 4.5L replacement for GM 4.3?

I know I'm stretching this forum's DIY rules, but I'm curious if there are any experience based knowledge on Merc's. new 4.5L replacement for the GM 4.3L Vortec. I'm daydreaming about a replacement for my 22 yr. old solid 4.3 Vortec Gen II boat, but I see my choice is the Merc 4.5 or a GM big...

    Dist. Rotor Removal?

I finished up 22 yr. deep maintenance this winter, changing serviceable good parts just because I had access. I've never touched the dist. cap, rotor or plug and dist wires 'cause the engine has been running great. But This is the last maintenance point I haven't touched, and I'd like to get at...

Bell hsg. lube monitor hose size?

I've had my bell hsg. off many times, and I think the worst part is disconnecting the lube monitor's reusable clamp on the bell hsg. hose barb. I know it's tight in there, but if Merc. would have given me an extra inch, removal would much easier. My bud tore his in two, so we went to Advance...

    Gimbal Bearing

Damn man, none that I've pulled gave up easily, but this is brutal. The slots mr 88 mentioned are on the inside. Someone installed it backward, and apparently crooked. You can still get the bearing out, if you have small fingers. Feel between the inside face of the bearing and the shaft seal...
