2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

Geroge, my focus is now on post #69 along with a couple of suggestions about fuel flow, most recently by Lou. In re-reading post #69 you asked, “Would the fuel pressure inline from the pump to the carburetor change when the motor is under a real load on the water compared to running on muffs?”...

George, I do not recall if you got on the water with the fuel pressure gauge installed and was able to monitor it under load / when it was bogging down. Recall for safety this will take 2 folks, one to drive and one to look at gauge. My concern is that this was only done on the muffs. Thanks.

2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

@Lou C would you mind reading thru this thread to see what we may be missing? George (the OP) has been great at sticking with the forum and following thru on a ton of items but still stuck. My thoughts are a restricted exhaust that he still needs to investigate but would appreciate yet another...

    Water pump leak?

You are lucky to have a helpful neighbor. But let’s walk before running. I.e. no reason to dive in deep and pull the motor from the get go. Also, a leak down test is only needed if you have low compression. And it only provides an indication of where the issue is (rings, valves, head gasket or...

    Water pump leak?

Barring other input below are my suggestions. Being unaware of your skills and what tools you have, I will default that you are well knowledgeable and equipped. However, if there is any question on ‘how to’ or what tools are needed, please do not hesitate to ask. As a precursor suggest having...

    Water pump leak?

My understanding of how these water systems work on marine engines translates into: The temp gauge would not register an overheat (more likely under normal) but your exhaust system would be cooking with no t-stat installed. I would suspect the JB weld on the exhaust pipe is due to the prior...

    Water pump leak?

Oh wow! So going to need some history here. Is this a new to you boat, etc.? Since you have owned it have you been out and running around with no issue until you noticed this leak? Need to know all as there may be damage to the exhaust system components due to lack of sufficient water flow. My...

    Water pump leak?

Good for you that you stopped! Something still wrong as you surmised. And agree with your approach. Can also do this > using the garden hose backflush the heck out of everything water related > pull off hoses, couple garden hose to disconnected hose with hands to make a seal and flush. Note: I...

For the coil test underway > the only way I can think of is described above with the timing light. Agree does not appear to be contaminated fuel You are doing all the right things (pulling on wires, etc., etc.) I am still hung up on the restricted exhaust. I know you were reluctant to pull the...

    1981 MerCruiser 120 tick/ squeak

I think same as before. And since getting worse my thoughts are to stop running it and start the investigation and teardown. But that can be a good thing > if you have local family members with the same shared experiences you had with the boat make it a fun project for all of you. If family is...

Time For A New Fuel Pump?

    Low Voltage at RPM?

Ok, so no water in fuel > good news. And carb rebuilt. And compression good. Given the 2 symptoms of electrical and poor performance I am going to suggest a couple of directions, starting with the poor performance. Assuming your carb has an electric choke (per the diagrams I looked at it does)...

    Low Voltage at RPM?

Thanks for the extensive background. But only is causing me to ask more questions :) I am surprised at the need to move the fuel tank vent to preclude water. It just seems odd to me that the original boat designers would place it in such a position as to be able to ingest water. Thinking out...

    Water pump leak?

Unsure of the impact of regular grease on the rubber of the impeller. However, you can use some kitchen dish detergent to lube it up, like Dawn. Also, while the AfterMarket (AM) Raw Water Pump (RWP) may work fine for now with a new proper impeller, I would strongly suggest get a proper one as...

    Low Voltage at RPM?

If I may, suggest your priority is the bogging and running poorly at higher RPM. While you seemingly have a concurrent issue with voltage regulation / output that may be impacting the poor running I am struggling to connect those dots unless there is a severe short somewhere which I suspect...

    Water pump leak?

Follow up to my above comment: when it comes to critical parts (i.e. parts associated with cooling and ignition) recommend you stick with OEM or SIERRA brand. When it comes to complete raw water pump assembles, OEM or Johnson (which I have come to learn is the provider of the VP pumps). And for...

    Water pump leak?

The little rubber cap on the anti-rotation bracket is nice to have but not critical. Item no. 5 of link. The inner seal does look compromised and may be the reason for the leak. Hard to tell but look at the highlighted area in the pic below. A good source for rebuilt pumps is a gentleman on...

    Water pump leak?

I must run for now but here are my initial thoughts: The backing plate looks to be grooved which would limit the pumps effectiveness You need to take out the impeller and look for scoring in the pump housing as well (pics helpful) If the impeller is more then 2 or 3 years old, suggest replacing...
