    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Quick reply as I must run: Bolt color does not matter. Follow Sept 5.1 of post no. 29 to check the straightness of any straight edge you buy. Try to buy one at least as long as the head. And while your initial measurement of 0.04mm is promising, you really need to follow all of the process for...

    1981 MerCruiser 120 tick/ squeak

Thanks for the additional info. I am jumping to the assessment that this is like a member of the family with a lot of great memories. I envy you. As you may know oil in an engine provides more than just lubrication > it’s also a cooling agent. And unfortunately, when the oil is down that low...

    1981 MerCruiser 120 tick/ squeak

Your ticking noise is more then likely a lifter as AD suggests. However, I suspect a deeper issue and that is the loss of the 2 qts of oil. Can you provide a history of how long you have owned the boat along with what maintenance you have done this season and when (like last season when...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Congrats!!! I love the way you tagged the pushrods ;-) Regarding the head bolts > there are a lot of opinions out there and ultimately it comes down to ‘are they overstretched’ > a bolt stretches for the clamping force and if it is not ‘overstretched’ it will spring back and can be reused...

2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

My only objective was to raise your awareness I try to be careful in my posts, but I get surprised by Mr Gates sometimes… maybe I should try a different software :-) I too have kicked myself there and as much as it hurt, I do not forget the lessons.... I know it can be frustrating, but I am 100%...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

KD, Holy Cow Batman! Expensive lesson. Dan, More on what KD is talking about with respect to valve lash (aka valve adjustment). Your lifters that sit on top of the cam that the pushrod seats into are hydraulic (vs solid). Literally a little cylinder with a piston inside with a spring underneath...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Awesome step by step > I am going to copy that and save it! Of note is that you may not need to take to machine shop > post those pics as suggested and then clean and then check for flatness. No issue if do, that is the safest route but is $$. The acetone will also work for checking for valve...

2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

While good to keep watch on the temp, the impeller is probably cavitating like heck and thus may burn up / become less effective. Also, the temp rise on the risers and the downstream rubber connections, etc., will see a spike in temp long before the motor temp sensor. Recall the water flow is...

2012 3.0L TKS runs great with muffs, but slow on lake...

A note of caution: do not run your motor past a high idle when on the muffs. While a burp up to say 2000 is ok you run the risk of overheating your engine and/or ruining your impeller running it up to 4500.

    5.0GXi Starter Replacement

Lou, that is a great side by side picture. Makes my arms ache looking at the OEM. I now have the perfect suggestion for what the kids can get me for xmas! Better then tools (well almost :-) )

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Its looks good. This is great pre-planning. But prior to getting the torque wrenches get the torque specs for your engine to make sure they are in the right range. On the low end will be things like the valve cover and riser to the manifold. High end will be the cyl head. Ideally torque wrenches...

Question regarding 1999 Volvo Penta 5.0GL and power to the fuel pump relay

How did you do this? Based on time pump was running or did you look inside the carb? With your answer, i will be able to provide more guidance. Thx

Need some info on adapting a Sierra A1 marine fuel line to a Carter mechanical fuel pump

One option but a little more money but would a nice-looking install is to find your local hydraulic hose shop and have them, using your hose, make up a hose with the needed fitting. We have a local family-owned shop near our factory and these guys can make anything!

Spark plugs and cap replacement interval

Good point and I have been there too. Somewhat related, I can tell a story where I finally learned not to wear any metal during my knuckle busting days > my metal band watch (which I was very proud of and a gift from my GF) shorted across the batt pos post and the fender well. Needless to say...

Not AI, old school. Customer would come in complaining about misfiring or hard to start on rainy days, we would run our hands around the wires looking for that tingle. With the high voltage igns that exist these days, you are right that I best remove that from my bag of ticks. Thanks!

Dan, Overall, there are a number of steps for this process, one of which is flatness. In brief they are: Complete testing outlined above Disassemble Photos Clean, clean, clean while also protecting debris from contaminating Inspections for damage / veracity of components that include Flatness...

1996 5.7 Gi Bogging on throttle

If I may > what AD is suggesting it to measure the fuel pressure. You need to have a gauge like this one link. Do you have one? If not can possibly do a loaner from auto parts store. Only after validating there is an issue with pressure do you start to look for the reason why. Perhaps I...

Is this water hookup for winterizing or for running out of the water?

It’s typical when flushing at idle. Reason: motors really start generating heat under load, not idle. Unlike a close loop car system, the motor is getting a constant flush of probably 50 to 60 degree water (yes, I know not in the jacket but there is still a bleed into it). For my 5.0 I only get...

Thanks for the update. And given your situation, and that corrosion happens even when sitting on a trailer, the annual inspection outlined in #7 is still my suggestion. :-)
