    4.3 GL-D Electrical Issues

Great news. And yes, a loose fuel filter could allow air to be sucked in and cause issues. So, no need for new thread for “no start” condition. How is are the wiring issues that started this thread working out? All set?

Spark plugs and cap replacement interval

While “it depends” as KD and Tango point out and there are structured service internals, etc., IMO the key to knowing when to replace is annual inspection. Think of it this way: you have not replaced the items and unsure when last replaced, so the only time you will know needs replacement is...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Dan, Long post but please read thoroughly. Enthusiasm is great but let’s think thru a few things first and come up with a plan. Here are my suggestions and questions. Did you rerun the motor post confirming the FO and then pulling the plug wires one at a time? If not, please do as this will...

    4.3 GL-D Electrical Issues

Well please check in here before taking it in. Some aspects you may not want to do like pulling the sterndrive but again this forum can help. Since new, suggest reading these two threads link and link.

    4.3 GL-D Electrical Issues

Its always good to have friends that want to help but be careful…. This forum is the No. 1 site to help and provide appropriate guidance IMO and other’s (see posts 11 and 12 of this thread, link). Frankly, I would not be spending my time here if I thought it was a bunch of wannabes. Keep...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Please pardon my LOL… I am delighted about your enthusiasm! It's refreshing. No issue running the motor, you have already been doing it, and a blown head gasket will not cause additional harm for such a short period of time (if continue to run it, say 10s of hrs, then can create problems), so...

    4.3 GL-D Electrical Issues

Fuel injected do indeed have 2 pumps: a low pressure and a high pressure. Both assembled together as a fuel pump assembly. Here is a pic of one:

Is this water hookup for winterizing or for running out of the water?

Overkill. I have run for multiple hours over the years on the blue cap alone, no issue. Again, cannot run up to 2500 RPM and let it sit there... can burp it to 2500 or more but only a burp.

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

You got a great deal, congrats! Prior to pulling anything apart, AD had a great idea of checking the proper firing order and then from there, start it up at that 1000 RPM ‘idle’ and pull (one at a time and then put back) each spark plug wire from the plug. Pull it off completely not just a...

    4.3 GL-D Electrical Issues

Wow this is a lot to unpack here. Taking some of the points in no particular order: Unless you can post a picture of it I do not know of any tank mounted fuel pump. There is one low pressure pump that is mounted on the engine. The pump does not turn on with “Key On”, only “Key to Start” and...

Is this water hookup for winterizing or for running out of the water?

Not all VPs have this blue cap flushing connection where you can run on a hose directly to it (no muffs) if you stay at idle or slightly above. I mention this so as you do inadvertently advise others about “ok to run” on a flushing connection. Here is a document I put together based on another...

On the plus side, it’s a clean looking boat and will be a lot of fun once all set. We can guide you thru the rebuild needed and (depending) will not be that expensive.

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Just watched the video and while i get its a 4 cylinder (meaning a naturally rough running engine vs. others) it frankly sounds like @#$% and is shaking all over the place > like cylinders 2 and 3 are not contributing. Did you take it for a test drive? Under load this motor will not perform at...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

Well sorry to say but you need to believe the data. What comes to mind is a blown head gasket between cly 2 and 3. I assume u tried it more than once, if not do it again. And its ZERO? Assuming confirmed, its not that big of a deal as long as nothing else bad (like a cracked head). Do you have...

    torque or angle torque

Torque is all about stretching the bolt to apply the needed clamping force. There is both running torque and final torque. Running is the amount of torque required to overcome the inherent friction between the bolt and its ‘nut’. Final torque is the calculated torque by the engineers to stretch...

Thanks for the additional info. Let’s start with some of the basics and I will assume you have the needed tools / knowledge but if not do not be shy to ask, this forum is not about pride, its about helping you get out on the water  My suggestions to get this moving: Start with a...

Looks like you have two threads for same topic, so let’s use this one. While this may be a timing issue, can we back up a bit please? First off, engine serial no. if available. Second, what is the background on this? Ie is this a new to you boat and its been like this since you got it? Or is a...

What should be connected to this flame arrestor?

If you want to go back to original, its items 7, 8 and 9 of this diagram (link). While it is ok to remain as is, you should, at least annually, clean that breather along with your flame arrestor. Put them in a bucket of warm soppy water and let them soak for a while occasionally agitating them...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI Fuel in Oil Runs smooth at idle

I do not recall when or even if VP stopped painting the interiors of their fuel pump assys. What you can do is remove the fuel filter and look inside the circle of where the filter mates and see if there is an indication of black paint. If yes, its painted inside. So then only 2 choices, DYI or...
