    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

I hear ya on having the old motors. I love the sounds n smells too. I just look at it from a financial point. Ill only throw in the towel if it gets to where im throwing more money at it than its worth. Having high hopes that i get em working.

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

Update from the motor thread. Even though the current motor has lower compression than normal, she does run and would keep me at 30mph all day last year. So I fixed the lower prop shaft seal leaks, and rebuilt the carbs. Hoping that helps her start/run better. Going to test her in a trash can...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Back in the saddle after a vacation and catching up on life. Where we left off…. I was polishing a turd and thats done now. Ugly Duckling got new lower prop shaft seals, and her carbs rebuilt. I broke a plastic gas fitting on the primer solenoid cover so will replace that when it gets here...

    Speed of a 21ft Mariner

Makes me want to paint more of my boat white!! Lol. She looks great! Probably flys out of the hole and I bet thats the biggest difference between the two motors.

1975 StarCraft Mariner build "The Unicorn"

Im wondering if you could get some blue loctite on those screws in hopes that you do not have to retighten. Also may help avoid the potential future rust issue by sealing the bond too, since Id guess those are steel screws.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Thanks Rboyd, the original head thought I definitely agree with. All wires look good inside. I will do the other recommendations and start her up. Yes, it looks extremely clean for such an old motor. One question, since it doesnt have a control box, how do I stop it once I get it started...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

@RBoyd1971 Think all her gaskets are still good after at least a 3 year stint in the desert? Or do you find out by just running it.

Quite possible lol. Sticking with what I got - dont need more issues, especially with my wife.

    1978 16 kingfisher

I bought 1100 AL rivets at first, then went to T4. Arent T4 stronger for use on the hull? Remember reading thats what was recommended and what starcraft originally used.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

@SHSU That is correct. Id like to stay on the water for a few months until the end of the season. The ugly duckling is not worth rebuilding - yet. She has so many issues, and the UD would need balancing of some sort the way she shakes too…. Was told that by a guy at the docks who knew a lot...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Understand that I have zero knowledge of motors. Wasnt raised around them so I ask a lot of questions to understand what Im doing and why. Ive read enough posts to know many people skim over your advice which Im not trying to do. Just learning…. Old man raised me to make money to pay people...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Thanks @racerone I can already tell you the #3 cylinder is scored, the top 2 cylinders looked great. I did not take pics of it unfortunately when I pulled the head cover last year. Only ran her for a one week trip after that then the motor was put away until now. Would you still recommend...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Alright, compression test is done. Numbers are as follow and I repeated each cylinder 3 times, with each cylinder showing 0-1 psi change. Averages: #3 - 99 Bottom #2 - 100 Middle #1 - 107 Top So numbers are not great and Im not surprised. The hour meter that came disconnected on the boat...

How can I tell the model of a Starcraft?

Looks like a holiday since it has a closed bow area with the split windshield. Not sure if the names were different prior to the 70’s but thats what it looks like to me.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Thanks @SHSU ! When I was at the lake of course someone said I should just buy a new motor…. Not giving up on these 2 for a while lol. I bought the lower seal kit last year and did every seal in the lower except the prop shaft seal…. Newtons law lol. Going to forgo the others since i dont...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Thanks @ct1762@gmail.com . The prop shaft seal looks easier than I thought to do - found a good video of it on youtube from “brandon’s garage”. Now just need to acquire the tools for the job. For the exhaust, I did not do those gaskets, that was the PO. Not sure if he checked with a straight...

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

Thanks. Funny thing is she’s a J75”TLC”TE…. Definitely needs it. Probably could have run her all day even with it acting up, but dont want to risk ruining the whole season and possibly the whole motor. Hopefully i get some help in the johnson section on her and the future stinger project with...
