Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

You don’t need hydraulic steering for 35hp. I hooked up my Suzuki to the cable/drum steering system that it came with. It has been re cabled in the past and is in good condition. It actually turns too sharp. Have to be careful But you can put your steering cable through the tilt tube and neaten...

That’s hooked up wrong. It goes through the tilt tube on the motor. That setup is for a motor that didn’t have a tilt tube

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

The chain safety is a good idea. yeah a bow safety chain is a good idea. It would catch it. But in the event the winch stand failed, the transom straps will not catch it. An over the gunnel strap would prevent it from moving. At least until it was discovered

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

The straps were not broken. The winch was. If it were an over the gunnel strap, it wouldn’t have moved. Think about how they work and you will understand what I mean

    Ambitious fraudster or rare machine

Also there are companies that are willing to format decals to fit other cowls.. I have an 86-88 or somewhere in there ( faded serial ) Johnson 20. I was going to have a company format the decal from a newer Johnson that had a similar cowl

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

Yup. It’s actually scary when I add up the costs to mine. I had $3,500 into it when all was said and done running the old big twin 40.. I think I may have $10k into my little 14’ boat with the DF25A. It’s a little crazy actually.. but doing it a little at a time adds up

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

I gotta say. Mine doesn’t touch the paint, and I disagree. Over the gunnels is safer in general and that is why most modern trailers have hooks to attach a strap in such manor. Actually to be honest. When I brought my boat home on the old rickety trailer that it came with. It had transom...

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

If that impeller fails and rips apart out on the lake, your going to burn it up. If you have actually had it apart you should have just changed it. It’s cheap insurance. Outboards aren’t cheap I have and restored the same boat. It took me all of a month of weekends for new carpet, deck and...

    Cable and Drum steering

Something like the electric steering column from a mid 00s GM or Toyota might do the trick. But I don’t know about it being ignition protected.

If it’s a plastic windshield. UDP plastics or one other company who’s name escapes me probably will have the pattern and ability to manufacture it… for a price

2019 Suzuki 20hp with remote control

Ok I had to look it up. It’s an aftermarket kit that does have one for DF9.9-20. I was thinking Suzukis own troll control which works on 40hp and above Still, just get the tiller parts.

2019 Suzuki 20hp with remote control

Just contact a dealer for the parts to convert to tiller control. They may make a kit for it. Something tells me I troll won’t work with a 20hp

    Uprgrading outboard

Mercury and Tohatsu ( 20hp Mercury is a tohatsu ) both will not ship or sell a remote motor without install as they do not consider it portable at that point. Suzuki and i think Yamaha are the only ones that currently will. I know for sure Suzuki will because I bought a brand new remote DF25A...

    Uprgrading outboard

Buy a Suzuki from online outboards. Suzuki is one of the only manufacturers that will actually sell a remote control motor without professional installation while maintaining warranty. They offer that up through 30hp. If you

Stuck on what to do with mercruiser controls

Thank you. That will help figure out why the one I have doesn’t lock in neutral. The panel it’s attached to on the donor boat is rotted and has some flex. It did used to lock. Would the cutout for a new control be the same? I can find that template. I could possibly use the original panel from...

Stuck on what to do with mercruiser controls

I had a suspicion and was able to verify that those controls listed as TRS will not work with an alpha. So pretty much need to cut the interior panel. Is there a cutout diagram available...

Stuck on what to do with mercruiser controls

Make no mistake. I would use a lanyard if it had one. I could even add one somehow. I’m just trying to find the ‘right’ modern control that I’m not sure actually exists. I can make a new one work for sure by omitting the key switch and rewiring a little, which is basically what mercury did with...

    1964 Sears parts diagram

There is a chance, that if you can find a xxx.xxxx format model number, it may actually pull something up in Sears parts direct. Not information you could use, just neat if it worked. Sears kept great records that I can pull up IPLs for a 1968 garden tractor and have even gotten parts

Stuck on what to do with mercruiser controls

Well, it’s a 1971 boat, so as equipped it is exempt from the lanyard law, and the 1986 donor boat also does not have one. Not saying I wouldn’t use a lanyard of course. The problem is, Mercruiser has used flush mount controls now exclusively for years, so I can’t find a new replacement...
