    Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E - Won't roll over

Look for a 5 part video that discusses in great detail rebuilding a VP 290 drive. The guy that did the videos has "cave" in the name.

    Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E - Won't roll over

I believe #14 is a gear oil tube that returns gear oil pumped up to the upper housing. So shavings will circulate. And all bearings should be inspected.

Hopefully you can return the one that does not fit and get a refund.

    Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E - Won't roll over

The gear ratio is in the lower unit. If you determine the problem is in the upper drive you can rebuild the upper or get a rebuilt. But I would still disassemble the lower unit and inspect.

    Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E - Won't roll over

You have metal shavings around the cone clutch. Those shavings can circulate in the gear oil throughout the upper and lower drive. You need to disassemble the entire drive inspect every gear and bearing and replace anything that does not look perfect. Not a trivial task.

If you are going to do your own work you need to get the Diacom from Rinda. I have one and a fan of the product.

    Volvo Penta SX-M seized

So my DPS-A OXI had two missing teeth in the forward gear. And metal fragments in the gear oil when it was drained. What I was told is that the metal fragments would circulate throughout the drive going through the gears and bearings. So the potential exists for a lot of damage to occur. I...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

You can call or email Rinda very helpful. Find the connector on your engine and take a picture. My connector has rubber kind of plug/cover to keep things out (leaves, water, etc). I bought an 11" Acer laptop to use with the Rinda and OBDII scanner for my car. It was $400. I'd prefer my...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

However - be advised it's not a 5 minute learning curve to become proficient using the Diacom. But it's worth the investment in time. More learning curve than learning how to use a DVM but less learning curve than how to use an oscilloscope.

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

I bought the Diacom and a small 11" Windows laptop. I would prefer not to bring my primary laptop to the boat in case it got damaged. The laptop was $300 or $400. You can call or email Rinda to verify you are getting the proper adapter. Very helpful.

    throttle body discontinued

Get the Diacom and a small laptop to read the codes and about anything else the ECM can tell you. A lot of marine mechanics use a Diacom. Maybe get a 6 gallon tank with some gas and connect that up to test for fuel issues.

Best search on that website with serial number of engine or outdrive or transom assembly.

    2004 Osprey 24' 380-c-b Wiring

Sounds like you should contact the boat manufacturer to get wiring for the boat. But likely prior owners have added or changed things. A DVM will also be helpful.

Why not get the broken bolt out? Weld on a nut? Drill out with a LH drill bit and a screw extractor.

    5.7 GXI-H engine. Alternator problem ?

If there is only one wire beyond ground to the alternator then it's a "hot rod" style and is self exciting. They need an initial rev in RPM beyond idle before they will charge the battery. After that they charge at any RPM although better higher RPM. A normal alternator (internal regulator)...

    Warning lights on dash.

Or just replace the oil pressure sensor if you cannot get the specs for it.

    Warning lights on dash.

Regardless of how a VDO dash works, the oil pressure sensor must either change in resistance as the oil pressure changes or just be like a switch and open or close beyond or below a minimum oil pressure.

    Warning lights on dash.

With respect to the oil pressure, the sensor is often the problem on many engines. You can make sure the sensor is properly grounded to the engine. And if you can get the spec you can measure the sensor with an ohm meter with the engine off and with the engine running. Or it be a sensor that...

    2007 Volvo Penta 4.3 - engine swap

Why not just buy a reman engine of the same year and model that has a cracked block? I think the cam is different in marine engines vs car or truck engines. A reman is really the way to go as you never can tell with a used engine.

    Outdrive cover for DPS-A outdrive

I also am missing one the SS sleeves that line the bolt holes. They do not look like VP sells them as a part.
