    Frustrated with shift/throttle

Had a new VP shift & throttle installed at the helm last year along with a new shift cable for my Chaparral with VP DuoProp outdrive. Now ready to take the boat out and it won't shift into F or R. Disengage the shift and I can move the lever forward or backwards to rev up the engine. It's...

    Oil Analysis Poor Sample

You can get the UOA done with a NAPA sample kit for $17. Includes TBN which is good to know. Blackstone is what $30? Blackstone seems to also have a habit of trying to push car owners to extend the OCi. If you are going to push OCI then TBN is mandatory. And there some of the measurements...

    Anode in heat exchanger

Installing a new anode in the heat exchanger in my VP 5.7L heat exchanger. Its NPT so Teflon tape to prevent a leak or will the Teflon tape insulate the anode and don't want to do that. Maybe threading in the anode the threads will cut the Teflon tape and no issue with the Teflon tape...

    Oil Analysis Poor Sample

I assume you are using new tubing for each sample? You need to. You can also cut the tubing at an angle to try and avoid sludge. And you can pump maybe 1/4 of the sample container, dump it, wipe it clean and fill the sample container. Or get two sample containers. Look at NAPA sampling for...

Bayline Capri, 1986, no condenser on my aq131a points

I would try and get back to original condition. How about a true upgrade (vs your hacks) that get to a electronic - no points ignition?

Those darn blue VP drain plugs

So I have the older VP part number #3849500. They were superceded by #21114622. The one that snapped has a hole in the center. Which makes them weaker I would assume. But is a good thing for inserting the screw extractor after the plug snaps.

Those darn blue VP drain plugs

Mine is closed cooling. These plugs only drain the exhaust elbow.

Those darn blue VP drain plugs

I will ask Hardin. But needs to be the proper threading. For me it's not a drain plug for the block which might be common between Mercruiser and Volvo Penta. My blue plastic drain plugs are in the VP exhaust elbows.

Those darn blue VP drain plugs

These blue plastic plugs seal with an o-ring and are not NPT. So normal brass NPT plugs will not fit/seal.

Those darn blue VP drain plugs

I have one of these drain plugs in each exhaust risers as it's closed cooling. Went to screw one back in getting ready for initial startup and it snapped. Looked at the other one and it snapped unscrewing it in the fall but I did not notice. Do they not last very long? Cheap plastic? Blue...

Exhaust Manifold and Riser - HOT

What year? I agree get a IR temp gun. The engine temperature gauge is measuring the temp of the cooling system in the engine. Remember the engine has a impeller for raw water and a water pump that recirculates the water through the engine. Closed cooling? If it's a engine that you can...

    2007 Volvo Penta 5.0gxi - no compression in # 4 cylinder

If I was the mechanic I might suggest the customer go for what I was positive would solve the problem. If he said too much $$ then we could talk about option that might involve labor to take things apart to investigate further. He could be too busy and a new long block would take the least...

    2007 Volvo Penta 5.0gxi - no compression in # 4 cylinder

Well I think the mechanic is playing it safe. At your expense. Certainly the head needs to be pulled and inspected. The piston is aluminum and the valve is steel. The crankshaft is heavy & steel and is not going to be flattened easily. The crankshaft can be ground also. I think there is...
