    OMC 460 backfire under load

If the idle stop screw is turned too much to compensate cam overlap it causes the off idle circuit to start bleeding fuel. Hopefully that is not happening. Try to get a vacuum gauge connected to the manifold. Readings will be lower when the boat is in the water verses when on a flushout which...

    OMC 460 backfire under load

Quite often when a Holley suffers a backfire it blows out the power valve in the metering body. When the carburetor was rebuilt did you use the correct kit for the marine carburetor? What is the vacuum at idle? How many turns is the idle stop screw in and how many turns out from seat is the...

    Hole in Mercruiser gimbel housing

Those 2 1/4” 20 bolts that secure the harness flange in the housing are known to break. Trust me on that. It is bad enough that they are just about impossible to try to drill out. You might get by if only 1 breaks off. Good luck

LEAKING IN FROM LOWER TRANSOM PLATE BUT NOT ROTTED

If it was possible to watch the leak and it was coming from a higher spot just under the drive shaft then the source will be the bellows. Now if the transom was soft this is also where water will show. You can try to check some of the nuts inside the transom that you can reach. If any are...

    Mercruiser 120 G1 A1 - Transom Seal

There are 2 pointed copper contact points with a inverted copper cup that connects them together, over the time the cup expands plus the marine environment does it’s thing. The original trim control panels used the exact same contact buttons, sometime up to 67 -68. I used to disassemble them...

    mercruiser 188 fuel help

It is possible that that the drive locked up for lack of gear oil. As SD said you should have had the drive and engine checked out before you used it.

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Water/Oil Mix Coming Out of Breather

The first time I encountered this one of my customers had ran the boat long enough to fill the bilge with what looked like vanilla malted milk. He told me he was determined to make it to the launch as he was fishing at the mouth of the Mississippi River and ran it all he way to the Venice...

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Water/Oil Mix Coming Out of Breather

The GM 4 cylinder engines have a thin spot in the casting in the lower water jacket that will perforate over time. Most times freeze damage is an external crack that leaks out and not in. The head is probably still good if you find a usable block. At one time it was possible to obtain a...

    OMC 460 vacuum test/reading

Do not try to readjust the carburetor if you check the vacuum with the boat in the water. The back pressure of the water against the exhaust always shows a lower reading.

Just be sure to get a dual plane manifold and not a single plane.

    Overheating under load

It is normal for the manifolds to have a different temperature. Sometime it can be balanced by trying different size stainless flat washers to the manifold inlet of the cooler manifold. A infrared temperature gun would help.

    Clear hose

You are right on about that Scott. I added the Indmar thermostat kit to keep condensation from building up under the valve covers on my boat. Not a cheap part but worth it. That was always a problem with the boats I used to work on. The bottom line is to use quality hose.

    Mercruiser 120 G1 A1 - Transom Seal

The cork gasket is a dry fit. Clean all surfaces with alcohol first. Do not use any sealer on it. After the housing is bolted on you can go around the housing with RTV if you want. Torque the mounting hardware to 10 ft. Lbs in stages several times to let the wood in the transom compress. I...

It looks like the correct one. Depending on the temperatures where you are you could loosen the choke some. Does it also have the brass inlet fitting for the fuel line?

It might be lodged in the thermostat housing.

    Clear hose

Home Depot/Lowe’s has clear reinforced hose that I have used to replace all the hoses on my jet boat. They can be used if you do not need any that are molded with tight bends.

    Overheating under load

Add a piece of clear hose just where the supply hose enters the thermostat housing. This will show if there is an air leak on the incoming supply. Have someone watch the clear hose before and when on plane. If there are bubbles after the boat planes then the drive is the problem. If the...
