1982 Starcraft Center Console 18' Rebuild

If you use this paint, it likely won't perform well unless you use the hardener. And the hardener requires serious Personal Protection Equipment. Namely Positive Pressure face mask, etc. That kind of equipment is pricey. A normal respirator isn't enough. I wasn't willing to shell out $1500...

    I need a small in-dash tachometer

I've been seriously thrashing the web for a 2" diameter tach which can mount in my dash and work with a 2-stroke motor. So far, no joy. I've found a few automotive tachs which would fit, but can't handle 2-stroke engines. There is very limited space on the dash for the tach. I suppose I...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

This morning I had to remove the new Voltage Regulator... Again. I forgot to install the Thermal Paste on the rear yesterday. It took awhile, but I got it done. Then I adjusted the carbs to get the engine idle RPM into spec at 600 - 700 RPM, after a 10 minute...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I did get a new ground strap fashioned today and installed it to the regulator with washers as shims behind. Didn't have time to test the engine today but am planning on doing that tomorrow morning. I used 10 ga. wire but trimmed one end to accommodate a smaller connector on one end. Then I...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Yessir, we did. And the voltage was rapidly, wildly fluctuating from nearly zero up to 16vdc. I think that the regulator has an insufficient grounding point. I'm going out to the garage in a few minutes to construct a grounding strap for it so that the connection is really solid. Check the...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

After weeks of interruptions, the boy and I were finally able to get back to work on the Mercury yesterday. Made some progress too! YESTERDAY: The old OEM stator next to the new aftermarket one. The OEM unit definitely looks better built. And we had to deal with the wiring too...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

WTH is this? It's on the switchbox and it's covered with a rubbery surface. :noidea:

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

What kind of grease is this? Dielectric grease? Thermal paste? It's on the connector from the old stator to the switchbox. Is it for corrosion protection or something else? What should I use?

    Time for a new laptop.

I typically “jump in” to learn about recent tech when I need it, then I buy it and get back out. I generally don't stay up to date. Such is the case now. I prefer Windows. My current laptop is a Dell e6500 running Windows 7, which was built in 2008 and which I purchased used 3 years...

    Cutting cable TV

My cable bill has gotten to be ludicrous in cost. It’s gone up over 150% since Spectrum took over several years ago. :mad-new: My current bundled CATV service: No premium channels. Whole house WiFi. Whole house DVR Three cable boxes, including 1 DVR. Landline phone. 100MBPS internet My TV...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Well, I found the yellow/red stripe wires. I guess it's time to buy a new stator. Looks like this one is 16 years old anyway. I'll go ahead and order a new rectifier too, just because.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

If I'm reading the wiring schematic correctly, my battery isn't charging. I've never actually tested to see if the battery is charging but unless Mercury used a "magic bridge rectifier" I'm guessing that it hasn't been charging at all. That would be because of the missing wires from the stator...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Yah, that's in the plan. But the biggest surprise is that there are no yellow/red stripe charge wires coming from the stator down to the rectifier. So, unless I've missed something, I'm going to have to pull the flywheel and see what's going on with that issue. :noidea:

    Uh oh..New Transom?

This is how we clamped the transom for our Kingfisher. No screws necessary. :D We used long wood clamps to make sure that the two halves didn't wiggle while we were setting up.
