    CLR salt removal experiment

My boat (twin engine inboard) lived in a saltwater environment for 20 years before I bought it. She passed survey and looked great considering her age. After bringing her home (490 miles by water), I decided to pull the manifolds and risers to check for corrosion. Surprisingly, I found some but...

Does anyone remember when car & boat engines only had.

When I turned 16, custom vans were popular but I couldn’t afford one, so my very first “car” was a ‘67 Chevy Carryall (Suburban) with the 283 and 2 speed powerglide. Put huge chrome rims and TigerPaw tires on it, along with astroturf in the back. The girls seemed to like it!

Does anyone remember when car & boat engines only had.

My 1970 Chevy C10. Upgraded to electronic ignition, serpentine belt system, and R134. Yes, the A/C works. Single Holley 600.

    Renting A Boat

I’d also suggest you both take a Safe Boater class. If you were born after 1972 I believe it’s mandatory. In it you will learn the basics- safety, navigation aids, rules of the road, etc.

Steel OMC 3 gallon tank issue

I’ve used this tank for 15 years. It has always worked fine with my 25HP Evinrude. This spring it wouldn’t feed gas at all, so I removed the line from the tank. It tested just fine, pumping gas thru the squeeze bulb like it should. I don’t see a way to access the pickup inside the tank because...

    What battery to use?

You should get a pair of dedicated batteries for the troller and finders, and keep the starting battery just for STARTING. That’s how most bass boats are setup. Won’t hurt to keep a jump box onboard, too. JMI. Even my little Jonboat has a separate troller battery.

    Batteries

Ideally, you want a “starting” battery for each engine, connected thru switches capable of directing power to either (or both) engines. A third battery is typically used as a “house” battery, which would be used to run any 12V equipment when at anchor. This allows both of the starting batteries...

Are these gelcoat blisters? Need general advice on repair.

I’m a fan of Pettit, used their bottom paints for decades. Remember to apply the first bottom coat within the same timeframe as the barrier re-coats. Some people (not me) like to use 2 different bottom paint colors to tell them it’s getting thin. Here‘s a paragraph concerning the Great Lakes...

Delta style anchor for coastal MA/RI?

The short answer is Yes. Its a great anchor. The next question is- what size Delta will you use? FWIW, my 34 Silverton came with a 22# Delta, which was sized correctly for the boat. Worked just fine for many years, anchoring in mud, oyster shells, sand, and thru occasional grass. About 8 years...

    gas odor only when underway

Yup, that’s called the “Station Wagon Effect”. Some of the manufacturers tried to minimize the problem by going to side exhausts.

First time patching gelcoat, couple questions

Well without mat, the resin can chip very easy. The mat gives it strength.

Are these gelcoat blisters? Need general advice on repair.

Regarding question #1- when you do the barrier coat, make SURE you are able to do each re-coat within the specified timeframe. If you’re late, the previous layer must be scuffed up to allow the next coat to properly adhere. Interprotect 2000e is a good product. Will you be doing a bottom paint...

First time patching gelcoat, couple questions

Looks like air bubbles inside. Did you lay on any mat, or just fill with resin?

Fixing up old AMF Sunfish/ Minifish boats

Grew up in the 60’s and always had a Sunfish. Sold it in the ‘80’s because I moved to powerboats and ‘didn’t have time’ for a sailboat. Retired about 18 months ago and suddenly found myself with lots of free time. Just happened to see a Minifish for sale locally cheap so I took a look. Not bad...

Jimmy Buffett fans check this out!

Going thru my pictures and found these from his (surprise) visit in October 2020 to the upper Chesapeake. This is a compilation of images circulating during that time. Wish I could have met him, that lighthouse is literally in front of my marina! I posted these in my media album...
