Water keeps filling boat cover, please help!

Well designed custom canvas is the best! I took this picture this morning. Snowed 5” yesterday. My Silverton is on the right. That green Sunbrella is 17 years old (no joke). We had 26” a few years ago and it was fine. I clean it and apply waterproofing every summer. I hope to get at least...

    Windlass questions

I installed mine, it wasn’t all that difficult but you need to be competent with the 12V wiring (solenoids, thermal breaker, switches). I had an electrician friend guide me thru the setup. Good luck with the project!

    Windlass questions

A windlass is only designed to pull the weight of an anchor and attached line/ chain, not pull itself loose from the bottom. This is a common misconception. The proper way is to move directly over the anchor, then use engine power to break it free from the bottom. Once free, use the windlass to...

    Co-owning a boat?

Back when I was working full time, I had a co-worker (that I’d known for 10 years) ask if he could rent my 23’ speedboat for a weeks’ vacation. He was an honest guy but had zero boating experience. I explained to him the huge liability for himself and me if an incident occurred, and also the...

    Co-owning a boat?

Co-owning a boat is akin to sharing a spouse. Don’t do it.

    Glastron V-142 Seat structure template/pictures.

Those look like generic seats that have been sold for many years, not Glastron specific. Instead of trying to match what you had, consider buying new ones

    87 Johnson 30

Lots of people use a TinyTach on these motors. As far as trim, remember that adding a unit will increase the weight right on the transom. I considered adding one to my 1448 but decided the added weight would hurt performance too much. I’m 67 and can still tilt it manually fairly easily.

    Too big to beach?

That’s the way we anchor the 34 footer in our favorite spot. Doing it this way makes it easy to check that the rudders and props aren’t touching bottom. As the tide drops, loosen the stern anchor line and pull in some bow line.

    Which hull brands to avoid

Concerning used boats, it’s ALL ABOUT CONDITION. If properly cared for, I’d take a 20 year old Bayliner over a 3 year old Cobalt that’s been left uncovered. Unfortunately, a really well cared for used boat is about as rare as hens teeth! Another thing to consider might be an older boat that’s...

    Winter storage cover

Charlie- I respect your knowledge here and you are entitled to your opinion. Like you, I’m a long- time boater (40+ years). Please note that the previous picture shows my 23’ boat hooked to a truck preparing to be moved, NOT in a storage position. When stored, it is always sitting bow high with...

    Winter storage cover

Agree with Lou C.- don’t use more than 1 layer. I ruined a good cockpit cover due to the plastic tarp rubbing holes in the fabric below. I keep this 23 footer under a tarp, it doesn’t cover the bow. I do have a rope support running fore/ aft from the windshield to the stern. 8 years in Pa. and...

They look like barnacles to me! Are you sure it hasn’t been in salty water recently?

    What type boat to buy

First, get some experience by joining a sailing club. Make friends with people who like to sail and network with them. They can get you onboard and show you the basics and also help you to understand how things work. After that, If you’re near the coast you might get lucky and land a crew spot...

What model Maxwell windlass anchor do I have?

Looks similar to the RC6 or RC8. Maybe it’s an older model.

26’ ‘Lil Hobo by Catamaran Cruisers??

OK, it’s not considered a pontoon, but rather a ‘trailerable houseboat’. Got that! It rides on 2 fiberglass pontoons. My son-in-law has found a used one and is considering it for his family (wife + 2 kids, 1 and 3). He lives near the ocean and would use it as a day boat in the back bays, most...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

I am a BMW fan, but not the newer ones! They got too complex for their own damn good starting around 2005-6 IMO. My current Bimmer is an E39 2001 530i Sport with a 5 speed. Have had it for 16 years now. Really loved the 540 but they get poor mileage and don’t handle as well as the 6. I consider...

    New here looking for advice..

First, welcome to Iboats, lots of smart people here who are willing to help. Formulas have an excellent reputation, but back then all boats were made with wood decks, encapsulated stringers and transoms. That Formula weighs around 4000 pounds and with a stock 260 HP Mercruiser will top out...

    Anchor suggestions

What he means is attach a line to the bow eye that is long enough to reach into your cockpit. When you anchor, use this line and attach your anchor rode to it. I used to do this with a 23 foot cuddy cabin boat. No need to crawl to the bow. I might add that a secondary line should be added to the...

Wild goose chase looking for our perfect 2nd boat?

I'm in the Chesapeake and my boat meets almost all your criteria, no joke! -WAY under $200k. - 34’ long X 12.5’ wide. - NOT 1.5 MPG unless it’s idling in gear. - has 3 berths if you count the convertible dinette and sofa bed. - has a full enclosure. - has a full head with shower. - has 16,500...
