    1962 Evinrude Starflite IV 90 hp V4

Mates, I have an opportunity to get a near mint boat with a near mint all original motor...both from '62. I am here in 'enemy territory' (or so my brother might say), as we've only ever run Mercs with great success. However! This boat is of particular interest to me, and it happens to come...

    72 model 402 Merc - green wires

Asking this question for a friend: 72 model 402 Merc...the wires that run from the ignition box to the coils. Are these wires "resister"wires? They are large, green and say Mercury on them. The insulation has gotten hard and they are crumbling. They don't look like regular strand wire. Thanks

Vintage Johnson question...from a modern Merc guy!

My friend has a '56 30HP Johnson outboard which he just got running after 20 years of sitting. According to the info he has on it, this motor originally had a 24:1 mix ratio using the lubricants available in 1956. He is currrently running a 50:1 mix ratio using Redline Two Stroke Racing Oil...

    Possible no-spark on Merc '95 60hp OB

Mates, I'm running a 1995 3 cylinder 2 cycle Mercury 60 hp. I stored it properly over the winter, I've had it out 4 times this spring with no problem. Took it for the 5th trip out, but she was a no-start at the dock. (trying to take the wife out for her first cruise of 2008...I felt bad)...

    Duratech Boats website

The Duratech Manufacturing Corporation, a New York based manufacturer of top quality aluminum boats between 1950 & 1965, thereafter sold off to the Penn Yan company. The Duratech Boats website includes the history of the company, story of founder Roy I Moss, information on each model, a current...

Duratech - over 50,000 made but not represented here

Duratech (1950 - 1965) made high quality aluminum utility fishing and runabout boats for 15 years. They manufactured well over 50,000 units, many of which are still afloat. The man who began the company (Roy Moss) is now 86 years old. I believe Duratech ought to be represented here on the...

    Older Evinrude OB questions

I have an old (60's??) Evinrude, the old silverish-blue standard color. It belonged to my friend's deceased neighbor. He used to have a little fishing boat; this motor has been sitting unused in his shed for over 10 years, not having been started, but also not exposed to the elements (besides...

NO! Classic 50's runabout - turned into a SAILBOAT?

Oh yes it's true. Some of you know I run an old Duratech runabout. Today, what appears before my eyes but an eBay notice about a "Durateck" sailboat (mis-spelled), which as my subject suggests...was re-engineered from a 50 year old classic runabout. These pictures are priceless. Notice...

'63 Duratech aluminum runabout boat restoration

Here is a video compilation of my part-custom full restoration of a junked 1963 Duratech Neptune aluminum runabout in 2006. It was my first project, a TON of work, but also a lot of fun along the way. I ate meals in the garage half the time, and did not get much else done over a 3 month period...

Mercury OB - oil injection system

I've debated about my oil injection system, as to whether to continue trusting it or to disconnect it. Based on a couple of reasons, I am disconnecting it, and would like to know the best way to do so. I'm sure there must be a safe way to D/C it and leave it mostly intact for when the day comes...

Resource or guide available for boating terminology?

Got my first boat ever a year ago January. I did not realize how many specific boating/marine definitions there were to be learned! I asked a lot of questions and googled many terms. I did not even know for sure what part of the boat the hull was, did not know what a gunwale or a spray rail...

    Very nice Merc 50 available

Mates, I drove 6 1/2 hours one way to get a nice Merc like this one last fall after looking locally for a month or more. Used Mercs this nice are not so easy to find and so I thought it might help someone who may be looking to get one. Hope the bids don't go too high! I do not know the...

Merc cough/sneeze while idling...what is it?

I've got a '95 Merc 60 OB which is truly running great. However...what I notice often while at no-wake speed, but especially while sitting and idling is that perhaps every 10 seconds or so, the motor jerks slightly as though it has a split-second "cough", and the rpm drops some at that moment...

    DuraTech boats....ANY information?

I picked up an old DuraTech aluminum runabout this past January. This company was around in the 50's and 60's. Anybody have one? Anyone with information on the boats, the company?

    Steel tip needles?

Mates, just a quick one here. I sent away for Quicksilver WME carb rebuild kits. (Merc 60 hp OB) The needle I received is solid steel...no orange rubber tip as I was expecting. The obvious question from a guy who has not seen these before...does that steel tip provide the same seal down in...

    Proper compression testing on outboard?

Need to know the 'proper' way to compression check an outboard. I've found a few threads here on the subject, but the information is different, so let me just get clarification for what I don't know. I know that I need to warm up the engine, remove all 3 plugs, attach the gauge and crank for...

    Bad gas?

No...not bad tacos. I'm talking gasoline. d:) I'm still rather a new boater - this is the first year I've owned a boat and a motor...so I continue to learn. Much thanks to iBoats members! What is the expected reaction from an outboard (Merc 60hp in my case) if you get a bad batch of gas...

TWO cavitation plate questions - trim tab and hydrofoil

My Merc 60 outboard is missing the trim tab (that's what I believe it's called), the little fin above the prop on the bottom of the cavitation plate. My understanding of the fin is that since the prop spins in one direction causing the motor to pull to one side, this little fin counteracts...

River water deposits on lower unit - what to do...

Bought a Merc outboard motor which unfortunately spent the last 3 months hanging on a pontoon in the Fox River in Chicago (always IN the water of course), it sustained some 'attack' to the lower unit finish. Nothing is damaged mind you, but the lower unit was covered with slime, little tiny red...
