    That would allow water to get INSIDE the engine.-----JB weld would repair that.----But I see damage / wear ( scoring ) on bottom piston.-----Here that motor would be torn apart for inspection.----You found the " smoking gun " on this motor.

    Your search is NOT limited to the 81 model year.-----Other years 25 and 35 share the parts.----There was never a kit offered to look after your project.---Might have a couple of used steering brackets here.-

    ????----There is no bearing carrier nut on a 98 model 150 HP Johnson outboard.-----The two tabs hold the bearing carrier in place.----The bolt holes for those tabs are used to pull the carrier.

    The 2 threaded bolt holes are used to pull the bearing carrier.-----I do not believe you are looking at threads in the housing itself.----Unless they are threads possibly used to screw in a fixture for machining.

    A $100 donor motor is your best bet.-----It involves removing lower and upper mounts to switch out the parts.----Not super challenging for those familiar with tools.
