new to me Tohatsu 9.8 problems: oily, smoky, finally runs but won't idle...

Those pumps are very reliable. I would just flush the heck out of it. Probably still need a good carb cleaning. Likely don't need a kit.

new to me Tohatsu 9.8 problems: oily, smoky, finally runs but won't idle...

Probably an MFS9.8A3. Year is irrelevant. Only holds about 3/4 quart of oil. Yes, get the level down between the 2 marks on the dipstick. After that, if you can't get idle, it likely needs the carb disassembled and Properly cleaned.

    8MLHU limited RPM

It's acetone spray. No squeezing the bulb does not help. Yes, temp is pretty uniform. Not overheating at all. Both plugs are newish and look fine. Odd.

    8MLHU limited RPM

Yeah. That has the pump on the side of the carb. Works really fine up to 2800, but then no more. If you blip in a wee bit of carb cleaner while running (to richen it), it nearly stalls. I had the same thought. And, since the mechanical linkage for spark advance goes all the way to the stop, I am...

    8MLHU limited RPM

The timing seems good, as it goes right up to the stop. I am running in my test tank. The motor is to push a small sailboat.

    8MLHU limited RPM

A customer brought me this little 100:1 2 cylinder 2 stroke. Complains it doesn't rev fast enough. Hmm. Carb opening fully. Spark advancing fully. Compression great (about 130 pounds). Plugs look to be burning fine. Starts easy on about 2 pulls. Throttles up great until about 2950. Then more...

See diagram below. Yes, it adjoins the push rod.

2006 Tohatsu 4 HP No Reverse

No. The bearings go all the way in and seat at the bottom of the bore.

2006 Tohatsu 4 HP No Reverse

Model MFS4A2? If you lower the cam rod all the way, the push rod should engage reverse. If not, did you reassemble correctly? Is the spring holder installed in the prop shaft? Is the cam pointed in the correct direction?

Sounds like brushes in the starter are getting hung up. It is repairable.

2004 Tohatsu 90hp tldi error code 7000 and the battery light

Beware online Factory service manuals; they are copyrighted, and anyone putting them online risks serious legal pursuit. Have you verified the FFP operation?

Tohatsu 9.8 4-stroke dies after 20 min of warming up

Might well be time to clean the carb. Properly.

Tohatsu 9.8 4-stroke dies after 20 min of warming up

OK, always a good idea to mention actual model. MFS9.8B? Always prudent to run the carb dry at the end of the day. Grab a cheap IR thermometer to see if you are overheating. Is it peeing well, and is the stream either cool or slightly warm?

2004 Tohatsu 90hp tldi error code 7000 and the battery light

Unfortunately, the original MD90B manual is out of print. But the MD90C,( which is available from any dealer), manual has the same codes. The schaeder valves are metric; you can get an expensive gauge set from Tohatsu, or use a tire gauge.

    Tohatsu M18c problem

I would ask the aftermarket dealer about compatibility. You can use a timing light to verify timing.

2004 Tohatsu 90hp tldi error code 7000 and the battery light

I assume your model is MD90B. What in the heck is a fuel vacuum regulator? What manual are you using? 7000 and battery is a FFP issue. Could be a severed line or a pump problem. That info is right in the Factory service manual. What are your air and fuel rail pressures?

    Tohatsu M18c problem

the -1 is just a newer revision. That motor is so old, it's amazing you can get _any_ parts for it.

    Tohatsu M18c problem

Sounds like you also have a fuel issue. I would clean the carb. Properly.

    Nissan/ Tohatsu Oil Pump

Definitely need a compressor cylinder. If oil pump is leaking, need that too. Then see whether pressures are OK.
