New starter solenoid has no terminal for purple wire??

You are correct. If the pur/yel wire is present at the starter wiring harness you need the outside primary stud. Get the right starter, changing the wiring would be beyond acquiring the correct part

1989 4.3 mechanical fuel pump replacement

Merc 4.3L with carb used electric fuel pumps for a bit as well, along with some 5.0 and 5.7 OP mentions the "overflow/vacuum line" which to me indicates a mechanical pump. You posted a link to a mechanical pump yet mention an electric? FYI OP, the clear yellow line isn't a vacuum line, just an...

    Help understanding vacuum test

15 to me indicates a sound engine. As long as there is no variation of more than 1 inch and it returns to 15 after a throttle open/closed fairly quickly I'd say you're set. Of course the ultimate idle vacuum is approx 17 with little to no variation but I would have no hesitation to run full...

    Mercruiser 5.7 ?

Depends on crankshaft or prop horsepower. Horsepower is a great number, something most folks can relate to, however the number a boat operator should be interested is torque. That's what gets a boat up, out of the water and on step. Horsepower keeps the boat (planing hull) up and maneuverable...
