    How does THAT happen?

    Hard starting

Um.....perfectly fine carb when adjusted properly. Can actually get much better fuel economy at specific rpm over efi. Another conversation though. Holley makes amazing carburetors, some dislike them cause they do "dump" fuel but fortunately your 454 loves fuel, and air, and timing both...

What is this guard around the valve spring?

Yeah, but I wanna do a sleeper. The cobia I referenced earlier has a hard, i.e. upwards towards keel, chine. Would handle 454 torque/speed fine, trimmed properly of course And I have nothing against any sbc, great motors. They just don't have enough power to "hurt" themselves. This is why I...

    4.3 will not run

Love this thread, like many others it's motor/carb guys asking questions, speculating and getting along based on a single (and only) post from OP

    Hard starting

Sounds like a flooding issue based on info provided. As dodge states, your carb isn't necessarily the right one for the engine, based on oem reference. I love holley carbs, great performance with ease of adjustment. You can tune the carb to the motor, 454 is one of the most forgiving engines out...

    4.3 will not run

There is a thunderbolt troubleshooting guide in the stickies top of forum page. I'm guessing based on vintage posted this is the ignition system you have. If your engine isn't carburetor (is efi) then you may have a different ignition system. A serial number and pics help determine your best...

    Maintenance intervals

Hmmmm, can't pull the source out of my brain at the moment but I'm quite sure there is oem literature regarding replacing all transom bellows, hoses, senders and cable complete every 5 yrs. If I remember I'll check #6 and #14 tomorrow and report back

What is this guard around the valve spring?

Thank you, Scott! Many people who regular this forum know my extreme love of the GM 454/7.4 L engine. Fantastic torque output works wonderfully in the right hull/drive application. I do not own a boat but drive many on an almost daily basis and when the opportunity arises for me to control a...

How to turn V6 engine by hand

Just remove the plugs, pretty simple task Out of curiosity, why are we trying to rotate the engine by hand?

How to turn V6 engine by hand

If you remove the spark plugs with the drive off it's possible to turn the engine with a socket on the crank bolt. Not the best way but if the engine is sound you ought to be able to succeed with this method. If there is resistance, like your beyond 50 lb/ft torque do not continue trying to...

    Maintenance intervals

Iirc, alpha style drives such as yours require removing, inspecting, gear oil replacement, and maintenance every 100 hrs use. All bellows, water and gear oil passage hoses including shift cable complete require replacement every 5 yrs, ymmv

    Fuel flow

Yes As bondo says, it matters very much. Please ensure there is an overflow/rupture port and connected line to the carb for diaphragm failure event

Says the lifer.... OP: pretty sure you'll have a much better experience dealing with mercury than cobalt. Mercs csi is one of the nation's best when looking at the pleasure/recreation industry. They aim to please and have given consumers an alarming (imo) amount of access to their support and...

I worked for a minute for a cobalt dealer. Was like pulling teeth just to get info regarding boats they manufactured still under warranty. At times they were great, unfortunately most often they were distant and responses were few and far between. Ime when cobalt could feasibly pass the buck...

    Exhaust bellows

On some bravo 3 it was necessary in the past as a service bulletin for sbc. Prop vacuum and lack of decent exhaust flow was causing the bellows to collapse under load resulting in poor engine performance. Solution was for a tube in place of a full bellows connected to the exhaust flange on the...
