    Troubleshooting engine temp

Stuck open because of age, debris, faulty? If it failed once, it'll probably fail again. Testing for operation with boiling pot water is fine but if you remove a faulty thermostat best replace it with new and monitor operation

    Gimbal ring screws retorque

You can try to loosen and re torque but ime most likely the square hole in the ring is worn and won't clamp properly on the shaft. May be time to replace the ring and possibly shaft as well

Starting Issue After Unrelated Mech Repairs

There is a troubleshooting guide for a no start situation in the stickies, top of forum page. Read through it to understand the engines starting system. Lots of good info there

No reverse no matter how i adjust the shift cables

With the drive off and locked in forward gear the play in the lower shift shaft must not be more than 12 degrees. There is a guide and template for checking the shaft/spool play in the oem manual. AFAIK there is no spec for lower cable play, if you can't achieve full fwd/neu/rev by adjusting...

No reverse no matter how i adjust the shift cables

Yes, the lower shift cable I can count on one hand the number of shift spools I've replaced, very much doubt this is your issue

What type of coolant to use?

You'd be surprised what engine manufacturers are using for anti freeze today. I know for a fact Ilmore uses poly for running af these days. Is strange but I figure routine maintenance with a close eye gives excellent results, ymmv

    1992 Trophy not advancing spark

If you post the engine serial number that'll help greatly for those here who have ability to look up info. What is the current total advance? Is idle timing set to spec? Guessing based on info provided and that whoever did the long block swap moved all oem merc components to the new it is a...

2002 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI rich Condition

As in no beep at all upon key up? You should hear at least one beep at key on, engine not running. This is to allow the operator to know the audio warning system is operational. If you do not hear a beep upon key on someone may have disabled the audio warning system or it has failed. Only...

2002 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI rich Condition

Would also add to chris' post about audio warning system. Is there an audio "beep" when you first turn the key switch on?

Mercruiser 3.0 Water Pump Pulley Not Lined Up

Did you buy oem? I wouldn't trust aftermarket to work properly. Measure the off set of the output/input edge to the pulley flange and compare distance to the old one

    2007 3.0 TKS Fuel Filter

Not especially, it's an added directional element to prevent fuel from seeking past the filter. My idea is if you maintain proper, routine maintenance it's a non issue to reuse of even discard the gasket. Have seen in the past the gasket get partially caught up in the filter

    Mercruiser 3.0l TKS stalling

Agree, however a drip at that rpm, or any rpm for that matter is not normal. Either vacuum/timing issue or blockage in the carburetor

    Recommend a dwell meter

Would not recommend replacing an oem system that is still operational. Points, although recent quality of replacement parts has been suspect, I'd recommend keeping the conventional system. It's proven and, again parts are questionable but I've seen out of the box upgrade kits failed initially, ymmv

Mercruiser 5.0 50 degrees at idle

Unlikely, however I'm curious, is a piston stop bolt a tool most used for rebuild or complete package troubleshooting? Am truly interested, no snark intended and I've read reference to said tool in recent threads. Just wondering the veracity of the tool

    86' mercruiser 3.0 exhaust bellow

I install all exhaust bellows sans adhesive. Completely clean of all corrosion/remaining adhesive and install bellows gimbal side first. After all other transom assembly repair is finished, my final step is the install of the exhaust bellows to the bell housing flange. Install goes well with the...

    DIY Audio Alarm System

Ya spent 10 bucks on a warning horn and proceed to fab a resistance device to alleviate voltage/response from the horn to make the audio level tolerable? My best approach would be to jam a cig butt in the horn, listen to the quiet hum while Amazon delivers a few more horns of varying quality...

    new 5.7 1987-1996?

Can't say for quality of michigan but ime snj is unreliable. Had two issues with the reman failing after short hours, both swaps performed well. One was aerated block due to rod cap bolt failure, other one was broken head of exhaust valve. Both times snj denied build quality and proposed far...

    Mercruiser 3.0l TKS stalling

Yeah, for a sound running engine with proper fuel delivery I disagree. A carburetor can be inspected, cleaned, rebuilt, and adjusted properly. Dripping down venturis means clogging somewhere, especially with a Rochester og/copy like OP's. Let's get a baseline with fuel pressure/vacuum while...
