My 3-year electrical headache was solved today, and it was a simple fix! Wondering if this is common.

It appears that your motor has a simple full wave rectifier which converts the AC charging current of the stator to DC for battery charging. Inherent to this kind of charging system is the battery which acts a load on the charging system reducing the voltage to near battery voltage and acting...

    Tires…

Radial and bias belt tires corner differently. That is one reason not to mix them on automobiles and trucks. All my trailers came with bias belted tires. Even my 4300# dual axle trailer. Obviously, the tow vehicles are radial tire equipped. It would appear that is not therefore an issue.

    Wiring help!

Gee, isn't the outboard motor going to get 48VDC?

    Boat Tarp Material?

Sunbrella is the best against rot. It is expensive, however. Canvass and its synthetic versions are pretty good, but don't last as long. So it is a flyoff between covers that last longer than others and the price of the cheaper covers. Wind damage makes a difference.

    ignition switch

You still do not want the motor to start in gear, so a neutral safety switch is a must. I would expect your control will have one.

    Cleaning stained gelcoat

MaryKate on and off is a mixture of 2 acids plus alcohol. It takes off most stains. Wear gloves.

1976 mercury 115 possible fuel pump issue?

Remember, when starting, you cannot normally flood them. So, pump the primer up until hard, cold start lever all the way up, hold choke button and crank her until she fires. After that, feather the choke until she is warmed up, and lower the cold start lever.

    Spring is around the corner

I painted my props a few days ago. In about a month, I will roll on some bottom paint, however, I still need to redeck my dock, get some fill and gravel, paint the house, nail down some capping boards on the bulkhead and other sundry stuff.

    1991 90HP Mercury not starting

Gee, my 1973 and 1977 Mercs as well as my 1993 Merc have the "W" machined into the crank and flywheel. The pasts breakout of the OP's motor did not show a flywheel key. While it is true that I never worked on the OP's motor, I think it likely he doesn't have a flywheel key.

1976 mercury 115 possible fuel pump issue?

The fuel pump condition does not affect the starting of the motor, as the primer bulb fills the carbs with fuel. The fuel pump will only affect the running of the engine at high speed or after she idles for a couple of minutes to use up the fuel in the carbs. On the backdrag carbs, there is...

    1991 90HP Mercury not starting

Mark, 1 shot of starting fluid is not going to wash off the oil he has been giving it by cranking and choking. Hence the reference to 1 shot. Racerone, most Mercs do not have flywheel keys. They have a "W" cut into the flywheel and crankshaft. I suppose they could strip, but they do fit...

    1991 90HP Mercury not starting

Give it 1 shot of ether. If she doesn't fire or backfire, you have no spark. Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case she catches fire. If she fires and runs for a few seconds, it is likely carburation is the problem.

1996 Evinrude Vindicator 200hp--engine keeps quitting on start-up

Alot of those motors have the quickstart system. Every time the starter is activated the quickstart system kicks on for a few seconds. If the engine is cold, quickstart is supposed to stay on until the motor is warm. You might check the port temp sensor, as it is the one that controls the...

    Mount Swap

I was unable to find serial number DC133106. Serial numbers usually start with a single letter or no letter at all and just have numbers. A serial number beginning with D or C would be a 3-cylinder 50HP model, 1990 or newer. I presume you have the 4-cylinder model. The 4-cylinder models...

    Mount Swap

The tilt tube is simply a piece of threaded pipe. It is removeable, as are the two transom clamp brackets. PTTs changed over the years, so it is hard to know what you have.

    Mount Swap

If there are identical, I would expect that you would be able to swap the PTT units, without removing the top (or bottom) motor mounts. If not, the motors are not identical, and I would suggest you post some pictures.

something new coming in electric OB

Gee, I wish it were so. A lot of people think the earth is flat. Some that fly on airplanes. Luckily most of the people in the US are intelligent, reasonable, good people. I would hope the flat earth movement would be OBE.

Won't shift into reverse or neutral

You would be well served to follow Racerone's suggestion. Fixing a gearcase takes special tools and knowledge. It is best to make sure it needs it, and to price a SEI gearcase replacement.

    Closed cooling worth the money?

Gee, what does the repower cost? Remanufactured I/O engines are pretty cheap. I/O engines should last 20 years if raw water cooled in salt water. The manifolds and risers rot out after 10 years or so. Usually FWC systems on V engines cool the risers with raw water. If you are considering...
