2007 mercruiser 3.0 Rust by the looks of it on side of block cover

just surface rust I had some in similar locations on my 3.0 that was fresh water only. Nothing to worry over. AD has you steered straight on the valve cover vent hose to flame arrestor. Some oil is normal on these. Mine always left a little sheen but ran hard for many years before I sold it, 25...

engine water leak (NOT Transom or Stern drive)

You will have to get under there and see where the leak is coming from. If you are lucky a core plug pushed out or if block is cracked it isn’t pushing water into the oil . Is your oil milky ? If it is the block is roached

    your opinion

In salt water is a great addition , especially if you can do a full system. By donor - do you mean yo are looking for a used system? I think you will find more aftermarket system than factory installs. places like michigan motorz can set you up with a complete system. I think they are a...

    Exhaust Riser?

yes do what you want with your boat and your money. to the OP if the sealing surface is good and they pass an acetone test you will not have an issue. In salt plan on replacing every 5-7 years. Inspect every year or two.

    Exhaust Riser?

Most of the issue is the sealing surface - they can be filled with acetone and leak tested while off. Acetone will wick into pin holes and cracks and show defects that may not show on pressure test or water filled test

    Engine choice

This was on a rebuilt engine you bought? Or one you rebuilt. Sounds like a bucket of chit, the more you stir it up the more it will stink …. Obviously a piston to ring mismatch. Two choices, take it to competent machine shop and start over, or get a truck vortec 5.7 from a wrecking yard and...

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

you can go to the resto forum and see how folks check with drilling small holes. Unfortunately likely will need replacement, its pretty insidious how rot will migrate through a boat

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Yes a mc1 will bolt up to a later R, MR, or alpha one gen one drive. as Scott mentioned if you do the swap might be worth going to the c1991 and up gen 2 set up. have you checked your transom normally all that sealant slapped around the transom housing is indicative of transom rot

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Yes one piece rms went to flywheel mounted coupler vs one on studs coming off crank hub. Not sure if it was the mc1 to R/MR/alpha gen one that must have made coupler shorter . He should have both couplers so should be able to mix and match a solution

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Could be maybe can swap coupler off old engine to match yoke not. I don’t think the 3.0 changed coupler or flywheel until 1990 ish when single piece real main seal was implemented

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

As outlined you should have everything to mix and match components to make it work. Use the MC-1 flywheel cover to match your MC-1 mounts. Riser offset you may have to mix and match or use marine hard wall exhaust hose. Shifter assembly - as Bondo mentions it can go where ever is easiest...

    Concerns with exhaust

The bellows are a PITA to change so a lot of guys use the exhaust tube that only connects on the transom end. with the bellows expansion tool I did not find it terrible to but the exhaust bellows on. Would I want to do that job every week.. no but not a deal breaker

    Concerns with exhaust

Drain it but shortly two more people will come by and give you three different answers. are you in fresh or salt? For best results therotically drain and back fill without anitfreeze with corrosion inhibitor ( aka not the $3/ gal chit at Walmart)

    Engine Overspeed?

Yeah MB and BMW do some stupid chit these days. Wife loves her Mini ( aka BMW) but my god what a maintenance hog vs our Toyotas. Have one window on the mini that gets fooled into thinking it’s closed by the controller, also the rear view mirror doesn’t stay up. Easy change out right…. No the...

2 Mercruiser 5L EFI with all 16 Cylinders of 175 psi or more??

X3 what AD and Bondo said these are great numbers but a bit inaccurate. All it shows is engines in great shape. What was one engine replaced? Or is this an older boat where repowers we’re done staggered ? if in salt would be thinking water ingress due to exhaust manifold lack of maint .

    Concerns with exhaust

Exhaust bellows can be torn and nothing will happen. They are full of water when boat is at rest because exhaust gets routed to the prop hub. if your driveshaft bellows and shift bellows are good leave it alone. I ran several season with a torn exhaust bellows before I did a complete transom...

My stern drive oil is black

The only time i have seen black drive lube (this is bluesih green merc hi perf) was when I bought a handyman's special. Boat was 10-11 yrs old with only 37 hrs and a cracked block due to no winterization.... Pretty sure lube had never been changed, boat still had the original fuel and oil...

    3.0 Mercruiser

Well if you made this much improvement by cleaning the tank and lines would think taking the carb apart for cleaning would be worth knocking off the list. The anitsiphon valve might be worth pullling to see if it hangs up intermittently, are the inside of the hoses degraded ?
