Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

Yes I know that but when I have done the same it seems like some water sits on top of gaskets. As others have stated make sure surfaces are flat, use the OEM metal/fiber (not paper) gaskets, and a little perfect seal/permatex #3 on the bolt threads so they come out down the road.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Yeah there is an issue with power given the combo you state. If the tach is accurate prop down until you get rpms up to 4400 or so. I believe Barr makes an adapter for the head and manifold mismatch you have...

Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

Pretty sure that is a casting line to op doesnt look like water is streaking down exhaust side. Think water in bottom came when you took it apart

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Would question if your tach is accurate if only getting 3500 rpm with a 15p, unless you have the wrong gear ratio drive for your engine. what is max rpm for this motor ? You should be up around 4400 or more rpm. I also found the same thing with a couple different 21, 22, 23" props- you hit a...

Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

this is a leakdown tester. It outs a known pressure of compressed air into a cylinder and measures the residual pressure the cylinder holds. Leakdown is measured as a % leakdown . <5% is great, start getting over 10% you have an issue. What I was mentioning is just putting compressed air in...

Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

New compression with an accurate gauge is 150 psi. When its starts getting below 115 give or take, or you have a big difference between cylinders you have issues. If low a leak down test can be used to pinpoint where you are loosing it. Can also put compressed air in the cylinder and see if...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Gimbal Ring

Leaking is not going to hurt it as it is wet anyways... it will hurt the pin - Nu Wave marine sells Stainless versions. Maybe some others will weigh in but I'd probably run it. Of course if it breaks I'm out of town that week...

    Engine oil choice 1984 3.8l

The only thing I might add is you have a flat tappet cam, some modern oils do not have enough zinc or ZDDP for flat tappet cams as most engines are roller lifters now. Pretty sure Rotella T4 (conventional not sythetic) still does have enough zinc for flat tappets. Not only do a lot of guys...

    48 years...

@Scott Danforth might have some thoughts. Would have the transom plate replaced and made the thickness of the transom mount on the new outboard. have that time into C channel or boxed tubing on sides of motor bath tub to spread the load so be no issue.

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Gimbal Ring

I put put the swivel pin in there and torque the two bolts down put steering arm on swivel pin and see if there is play. From the photo it looks alright to me but can be hard to tell from the keyboard

Alpha One Gen 2 prop shaft seal replacement

The plot thickens on this one ... Given how much line was stuck in the seals I was concerned that there would be some in the prop shaft roller bearing so I pulled the bearing carrier. The retainer was PITA as I broke my 1/2" drive 18" breaker bar (pissed me off as I had it for years...). A...

Stern Drive, Trilux and Prevale Sprayer

Been a few years since I used them but i found those spayers basically useless. If you have a compressor get a harbor freight spray gun. Either way you need to thin the paint down

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Shaft Housing, Lower oil seal replacement?

I use a beam type like this for setting preload on tapered roller bearings relatively affordable. Have had great results swapping ring and pinions Torque Wrenches, 1/4" Square Drive, 0 - 80 in.-lbs. and 0 - 9 NM Torque https://www.mcmaster.com/7181A22

New (2020) Alpha One Gen 2 wont come off

Not much different. While its good to remove your drive and inspect I certainly don't every year. If you still have an original greasable gimbal and its smooth leave it alone and grease it. Grease coupler inside. I do engine oil, fuel filter and gear lube annually, grease points and my boats...

New (2020) Alpha One Gen 2 wont come off

The seal behind the gimbal bearing only keeps gimbal bearing grease out of bilge so it is not critical, would not take out a working gimbal bearing to replace it. It may not even be used anymore with the newer peralube (non greasable) gimbal bearings Ok dirt and grease ring from coupler makes...

    Sierra 18-2619-1 Outdrive Gasket Set

Yeah - buy a couple in case you mess one up putting them on. Also keep some hi perf gear lube and a impeller kit on the shelf. A fuel filter doesn't hurt to have laying around either, never know when you will run into some chit, its the middle of summer and an hour drive to the merc dealer.
