3.0L Raw Water Intake & Drain Port Questions

Would think the T will let air in the raw water hose so it drains back both ways ? Otherwise water would lay in there and freeze. Can only assume it is essentially a vacuum break. There is a name on the heat exchanger would think there tech dept can answer the question

    Oil Analysis for high-hour 4.5L 250 HP

I never had an analysis but found with merc 25W-40 when used at higher rpms for extended time my oil pressure would drop from around 60 to low to mid 40 s . Not sure if it was shear or foaming or what. Also had similar with rotella 15/40. found Mobil one 15w50 did not do that

Mercruiser Alpha One, Gen 2 prop shaft rear seal r&r

There are two seals in there - the line cutter is a seal with a metal shield intended to keep finishing line out of seal. Speaking from experience it doesn’t work …number 57 &58 here...

    Another prop slipping thread

Yes completely agree was thinking about this wondering if the prop to hub clearance or slip is greater. I would not not replace the coupler since you are there and the alpha drive either grabs or it doesn’t. You may need a prop with more bite if you go out with a boat load of people… try a...

    Not getting fuel

You will only see it coming from accelerator pump nozzle when throttle is pumped. Fuel pump fills fuel bowl that is a reservoir of fuel to be sucked into the air going into engine while running Thru the jets and the Venturis. There is an accelerator pump that is a small pump inside carb that...

    Not getting fuel

Entirely possible needs a carb rebuild. When this happens do you have spark? If u dump a little gas down carb and you have spark it should at least cough if not run for a bit. Need to do some looking if you are missing gas or spark when it happens. Spark gap tester is cheap and effective on...

    Temperature Sender?

Yeah you can use a standard 1/4” npt. Just be aware that the blue plugs do not have a NPT thread on them. I think they are 1/2” coarse so it is not a regular pluming fitting. If I recall I thought there was a thread on here on the knock sensor being a standard GM part. The knock module is a GM...

    Mercruiser 5.0 starting problem

Would rule out some basic stuff like dead battery, loose or corroded battery cables (don’t forget ground cable too). Cycle shift to see if neutral safety is not making. attached is wiring digram yellow red going to slave relay gets power when key is in start. Check for 12 v there. If none it is...

    Another prop slipping thread

I usually go oem. While they are expensive there is too much junk out there last Sierra item i used , trim sender, never worked right . Limit switch works, could never get the sender working right seems to be reasonably accurate at idle speed but goes all the way up when on plane. Too much...

    Blown head gasket

First thing I would think it got overheated at some point. Would check the head and block surfaces for flatness. While the heads are off may have them gone through at a machine shop. Was compression good on the other cylinders? would change out the impeller in drive as a precaution.

    Another prop slipping thread

Rhoads lifters bleed off cam duration at low rpms To tame wild cams And create more low end power and idle vacuum. They reduce the effective cam duration by 10-15 degrees below 3500 rpm. Commonly used in hot rods in the US. Probably the first attempt at variable valve timing, but rather than...

    Water in u joint bellows

I had a similar experience my my old boat which had a Alpha gen one. Had a bad gimbal bearing, pulled drive (first time for me) and found small amount of water in bellows. Could not find a leak or tear in bellows. Put drive back in of course was too green to glue in big ring gasket. Put drive...

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

Yes definitely advantage of fully draining OB. While I can drain my block (5 plugs easily accessible) we live too far from where we keep it to take advantage of any warm days. You are much farther south..

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

Look under the cowl of a modern 4 stroke, thee are some chit burgers waiting under there as well. My brother has a Yamaha 50 hp 4 stroke fantastic machine but its tight under there too. Also has a timing belt that need changing while a lot of IOs have too much boat around them strikes me as 6...
