Which ignition do I have? 1968 mercury 500

My best guess without seeing pictures is the Lightning energizer type with a large red coil, this is electronic ignition no points, but there is a timing belt under the flywheel that might need replacing.

Help with old Mercury tach wiring.

The tach says Mercruiser and it only goes to 5000 rpm so I don't think it's for your motor - it's for a 4 cycle sterndrive. I would buy a new alternator driven tach and you can still use your control harness plug if you make a change in the wiring (see diagram) move the brown wire to a terminal...

    1965 Mercury 900 90 hp no spark

Make sure you take the red spark side terminal off first! The rotor is usually held on with Loctite and can be difficult to remove. Check that you are getting + voltage on the coils and the resistors, disconnect the mercury switch, turn engine over and check for spark, put a tester on each...

New old Power of Tower 6 cal 90HP

Here's a wiring diagram of a Thunderbolt breakerless ignition, if your switch box has 3 posts for the trigger then it should work: however the TB rotor is molded on to the shaft so you will replace the whole distributor adapter assembly.
