    1969 mercury 40 shear pin

Re: 1969 mercury 40 shear pin Mercurys don't have shear pins, they have a rubber insert that gives on impact . On the diagram you need parts: 29, 28, 27. or similar. I think the washer with holes is the tab washer that locks the nut from turning. You bend the tab (28) that is in a notch of (27)...

    Merc 500 Revival

Re: Merc 500 Revival You're correct, I would replace the seals, Oring and bearing just to be safe, but if you don't want new bearings check the old one after removal to see if it is still good. A tool (maybe a bolt, head first) is needed that fits onto the inner race for pushing out the bearing.

    Mercury/Quicksilver relationship

Re: Mercury/Quicksilver relationship Does it look like this? The shift and throttle cables will fit motors into the 60's but the electrical plugs were different for motors and years. Quicksilver is the olde tyme name for the element mercury.

1969 merc 650 stuck in forward gear

Re: 1969 merc 650 stuck in forward gear That is the surest way to get it shifting right, there is a cam with 3 positions in it and Neutral is the middle part of the cam. The reason you shouldn't shift into reverse statically is that the sliding clutch has "ramps" for forward engagement but only...

    Lower unit leak

Re: Lower unit leak This drawing shows the cam position, once propshaft is installed turn the cam counter-clockwise until it stops-this is forward, turning it more will be neutral and a little more is reverse.Never shift into reverse without turning propshaft at the same time. I replaced my cam...

    Lower unit leak

Re: Lower unit leak This is the bearing carrier torque tool,. maybe you can have a dealer rent you one or tighten it for you. That cost me $75 and I figure it's worth it. Spray a lot of penetrating oil around the top and bottom of the bearing carrier and let it soak for awhile before pulling...

    Lower unit leak

Re: Lower unit leak I can tell from your picture that the locking tab on the washer under the cover nut hasn't been bent down to lock the bearing carrier nut. If you can undo the BC nut it might be a good idea to undo the nut, pull out the bearing carrier (the part with the seals in it) - the...
