Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist. In the early 1990's Mercury started making the Force motors and they got Merc lower units, controls and ignition, by the mid 1990's they were clearly marked " Force By Mercury Marine ".. If you look in this pic, you can see " By Mercury Marine "...

'64 650 shift shaft screw up

I was changing the shift shaft bushing on my '64 650 earlier. Got a brand new bushing, brand new OEM bushing tool all so I wouldn't screw up. Well, I had to pull off the tilt interlock peices, and wasn't thinking and turned them while I was pulling them up, and it turned all the way over and...

how to remove paint on lower unit?

My '64 650 lower unit had what I thought was a scratch but it does catch on a fingernail, does not weep oil or anything like that, but I want to remove the paint around it to see if it is a crack or not as the lower did have a bit of water in it so freeze crack would have been a possibility tho...

How to keep shift shaft from falling out during shift bushing swap?

I pressure tested my old Merc 650 lower unit and only the shift shaft seals are leaking. Now I plan on getting the correct tool and a new bushing assembly with a new seal and oring right on it, rather than just a new seal and oring because it will be quicker with less chance of bad things...

    Is the Hudson considered brackish?

I was reading something on old Mercury's saying that it's not good to run them in brackish water and I understand why because of the plain steel driveshaft ect... That got me thinking, the closest body of water to my house is the Hudson river and I was planning on being able to use my boat there...

Lower unit screw, opposite side of vent/drain, above cav plate. What is it? '64 650

Not really thinking too much about it, I pulled the screw on the opposite side of the drain/ vent screws that is above the cav plate, it's a barrel screw ( no head ). Oil did come out of it, but obviously knew it wasn't right when I found the screw marked 'vent'.. Is the LU going to fall apart...

Found another boat, MBS kicking in.. worth it?

Found a boat on Ebay that will probably go cheap and if it does, might go get it. Custom Craft will be restored first and I will always keep that boat, but a 15'3" runabout with fins on the back is not as versatile as I would like... Anyway, due to the Custom Crafts construction, I bought way...

Remote oil filter bracket instead of Sierra marine fuel water seperator 'kit'

I have a Transdapt oil filter relocation adapter ( filter side ) for a Ford which I will probably never use and is brand new. Will it work with the Sierra marine fuel/ water seperator cartridge # 18-7919? It has std Ford 3/4-16 filter thread but I can't find what threads the Sierra cartridge are.

Tandem portable gas tanks with one tank non OEM?

Is there an adapter to make this switch using one fuel line, or do I need 2 fuel lines?.. 1964 Mercury 650 and I have an original Merc 6 gallon tank, want to add a mid 60's Elgin as a spare tank and use 1 line if possible. The Merc tank has the 1/4 turn connector..

Are ratchet straps legal for transom straps?

I'm possibly buying a cheap 'flipper' boat that I can use to get on the water once or twice for this season and then sell beginning of next season.. It does not have transom straps on the trailer and I don't have a set of 'good' transom straps but have probably 20 ratchet straps including some...

1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild The foam looks to me like it was poured in and then the top layer of plywood was pressed into it, but it may have been a large block just dropped in and installed. Open cell for sure. Once I get the back section demolished, I will then know where the...

    Reasons for restoration.

Re: Reasons for restoration. I wanted a boat to restore and got this So far I have managed to turn it into this ( ongoing resto ) And I'm doing it because of this.. I know the 8mm is grainy, but that is one of my uncles skiing ( I think ) behind the boat sometime around 1968. It's been in...

First New Boat Purchase - Single Female Help

Re: First New Boat Purchase - Single Female Help Depends on how long it's been stored bow down like that.. Storage like that can actually twist the tongue which will cause massive sway going down the highway. In that case, the trailer is worth basically scrap. And of course bow down is not the...

retrofitting battery ignition distributor onto old Mercury magneto distributor drive?

I've had this thought for a while.. Everything in the KD-1 magneto is NLA and all pretty expensive used.. I had an idea a while ago and talked with a machinst I know at that time about putting the distributor head from a marine I/O engine like a 3.0L Merc and lock the timing with screws thru the...

    decrepid starcraft located

Well, following the signs to a lawn sale way out in the middle of nowhere, and at the end of a long driveway I saw a Starcraft Holiday OB, with the vegetation just starting to grow in it.. On a trailer but no motor. I think it's the 22' model but it's at least 18'.. Looks complete and has a late...

    Holesclaw trailer vin location?

The old Holesclaw trailer that my 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray is sitting on and also original for that boat will need a lost registration applied for. It should not be a big deal since my grandfather gave me the boat and was the owner since new but both the registration for the boat and trailer...

    cool project boat

1960 whitehouse ? 1960 Whitehouse or other. He says he has documentation. Looks like the last of the finned era in a cabin cruiser. Fiberglassics does not show a Whitehouse exact but a Colombia has many of the same lines

    Chugger boat?

I'm thinking a bit into the future, but also more curious than anything. Browsing Youtube as usual and found somthing that I'd like to build. Originally ran across just shanty boats, but then ran across the Chugger, not the older commercially built 16', but rather the home built 1 from Lewis...

    Anyone use Mertons?

I was ready to fax my US Composits order yesterday when I found Mertons. They have a deal where you get 5 1 gallon cans of laminating resin for $130 and that gets around the $27 Hazmat fee. They are closer to me also so it has the potential to be much cheaper than US Composits.. Anyone use them...
