1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

Not sure why you don't just get a wrecker block. $1k cheaper, saves you a *ton* of time. A truck engine going bad is rarely the reason it's in the yard...Usually they offer a 30 day warranty or something. Check compression. You won't have to worry about any internal rust or cracked block like a...

Ebay for the carb. Intake was new.

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

The intake, carb, throttle bracket, water pump, bolts, and +/- starter are the only add ons needed for the vortec. Well under $1k. Can you get a 2bbl vortec intake? Yeah, I'd avoid the non-vortec balance shafts for that reason. When I was looking at the yards, nearly everything was newer/vortec.

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

You can pull a block yourself and you can get it done for well <$2k. If you want to do vortec: 1. If you can find a stick it will save you from swapping the flywheel 2. You'll need new: water pump (<$100), starter (<100) (or you can drill out the holes on your original to fit M10 bolts--a new...

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

Kind of. There are differences in the block that matter if you go newer. The peripherals don't always swap over, the newer blocks have different degrees of metric threads, the water pump might not fit, starter might not fit, etc. Newer blocks had serp belts instead of v-belts. That said, you'll...

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

This is the wrong time to buy a boat. Your performance is way off, my similar boat (granted 4bbl carb and vortec heads) has no problem getting on plane, even with 5 adults 4 kids on board, and can hit 44 mph with that load. 2k for a rebuilt long block is pretty good. Doing it yourself (plus...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

Are the mani drains ¼ npt? Can't remember. Might as well go ahead and drain mine way early this year, and would like to put some type of tool less wing nut fitting on like on the block drains. Usually I winterize multiple times a year...

    Anti Seize or Not?

The permatex works great, I put it on a ton of bolts. While it doesn't seize, it doesn't really break free either. Also messy. So an inaccessible bolt that you're trying to loosen and remove by hand might take a good bit longer to get out. Not sure why loctite isn't used more. It prevents...

Hard to start unless starter solenoid is shorted

Yeah, losing voltage to the coil when cranking. Only place that can happen that I can see is at the ignition switch. What do your gauges do while you're cranking?

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Usually the issue is in the cable or adjustment, or a couple of other culprits not involving the gear case. What issues are you having? The current specs will give you a ballpark, but won't be exact. Especially if you aren't sure that you're currently propped correctly (you need to know your...

That impeller looks like junk, not sure what you did to it after you replaced it, but looks fried

    Strange starter issue.

Yes, if the yellow/red wire stops supplying voltage, you essentially don't have your ignition key in the start position. I mean, if you know you have a wiring problem, seems like a good place to start regardless, no?

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Yes Ratio of turns of prop per engine revolution. In a 1.98 the prop turns almost 2x for every turn of the engine. Essentially like a lower gear in a car Your engine revs will be off, your boat will perform lousy, and you can damage it over time. Yes, you need to reprop Like achris said, it...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Close enough that you'd be able to reprop if necessary. What's wrong with what you have?
