4.3LX TB IV timing advance issues

do a little research and see if you can find a factory manual I might be off a few degrees from spec but should be in between the ditches... IIRC total timing should be like 22-24 degrees on it. You can do a little math based on balancer diameter if you don't have multiple marks on the cover or...

4.3LX TB IV timing advance issues

I don't know the specs for you boat but you likely have a 8 dge BTDC intial setting, then somewhere around 22-24 degrees total at like 2800 rpm. Hook up a timing light with an advance feature and rev it up to about 3 k. you should see the timing advance to keep the it on the timing mark...

    Chaparral Mercruiser Prop Question

I wasn't counting that close.... Your use is similar to mine I have a 2004 Sea Ray 200 sport (20.5') with a 5.0 Carbed engine (about 240-260 hp as It is a 4 bbl Edlebrock carb). It was a 4.3 boat that I repowered so it has the steeper V6 drive ratio (1.81:1). I run a 21" Revolution 4 prop...

    Chaparral Mercruiser Prop Question

I think if you want to do watersports with 8 people ( big ask of any boat) you will need to try a couple props, best to find a shop either local or on line that you can talk with and try a few. I have never used TP props but have read mixed reviews here. I had really good luck with Michigan...

Boat bogs down after 30-90 minutes

If you get above 170 with a 140 thermostat its too high. You may be sucking air or bypassing too much raw water if you have the check ball system Would not use until you figure this out.

Preloading without the rolling dial torque wrench

I would say no unless you have one like this. Torque Wrenches, 1/4" Square Drive, 0 - 80 in.-lbs. and 0 - 9 NM Torque https://www.mcmaster.com/7181A22 i used this to set 12-16 in lb rolling torque on pinion bearings

Replacing U-joints Alpha one gen 1

Not sure what is in manual but you can remove the nut vs chamfering it . There was a post on here where someone said they could get it with out notching you can look for it. Didn’t involve any special tools Here is a video on a gen 2 Either chamfer it or not your call, I don’t care either...

    7.4 flame arrestor to KN

It is the sticker that comes with it when adhered to the windshield that makes the boat faster Seriously good info that confirms most common sense

1989 Four Winns Carrara Mercruiser Alpha 1 Bellows/Gimble Replacment

I did mine last year gen two but basically same stuff. I made a couple self inflicted errors (shift cable and trim sender/limit) that stretched it out but did it over two weekends. If you are comfortable doing work like this its no big deal. I think the Oem kit at that time was closer to $300...

    Mercruiser 5.0 carb?

Willing to bet your knock system is retarding . Its not the 12 v to knock module its the 8-10 v from knock module to ignition module that is what keeps it from pulling timing out. If yiu see it not advancing i would either get a inline resistor like in a older style points and supply 9 ish v to...

    Can’t get on plane

Do you have replacement gaskets or are you trying to squeeze this in before the weekend ? If you have replacement parts strip it completely down, get a Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner and soak it in there. does a great job. Did you get the fuel tank cleaned out yet? no sense cleaning a carb...

Boat bogs down after 30-90 minutes

With thunderbolt 4 you do not put in base mode set to 8 deg at idle as ‘normal’. Basic timing light is fine I use a timing light and tach/dwell my dad bought in the late 60s …

    Can’t get on plane

Hard to say from my keyboard... I would use something like this https://www.grainger.com/product/1XGR9?gucid=N:N:pS:paid:GGL:CSM-2293:99F1R6:20501231&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsvTq2ODSgAMVxraGCh1tCA8BEAQYAyABEgI2evD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds suck out the fuel into buckets or 5 gal fuel cans. Look in fuel tank...

    Can’t get on plane

Ya gotta get that crap out of your fuel tank and clean the fuel system and carb. There must be a layer of water in the bottom of the tank to get algae in there this tool or something like it is what is needed for the idle mix screws...

    Trim Switch Malfunction

It is a diy possible repair - just wait until you have to do the bellows. Otherwise not worth the work IMHO.

    Trim Switch Malfunction

There is a 7/16 " bolt head up there above the bellows and a plate that pushes the limit switch and trim sender wiring in and seals it. Yes you can do it and if you go to you tube there is a video of a guy doing just that...but you can also jumper it out inside and go boating...

Mercruiser 5.0L two barrel Carb Leak?

A dirty flame arrestor will cause it to run richer same as if the choke is stuck open... Does the fuel drip off the booster at idle. Some where between 1200-2000 rpm the booster will start flowing fuel. I think on my GTO with Rochester 2bbl ( older brother of the mercarb) its is about 1800 rpm...

    Trim Switch Malfunction

If you have to use the trailer button to go up the trim limit switch on the port side of the drive is bad. They are kind of a pita to replace you can just insert a jumper wire where it comes in the boat and attaches to trim harness. Just need to remember not trim up to far while at speed...

    Mercruiser 5.0 carb?

That has a knock sensor module is the sensor or module non functional and causing it to go into timing retard mode constantly? Unfortunately the nimrods at merc set this up to need like 9 v supply from knock module to the ignition module to keep it fro retarding timing. Below is an except from...
