    Sounds to me that you're X Just thru you a curve.. you want to find all the drain fittings and be sure they are there and come winter in KY you will need to remove them so your engine doesn't freeze up..

    Seems your leaving about a quart behind, not a big deal, your gettin 75% of it. Tilt the bow up or down and you might get a bit more..

    I have an extra elbow gasket just for that situation. And I got a infrared thermometer as well, now I just need to figure out how it works..I will keep close watch on the temp differential when I get it running. The engine runs good and the last thing I want to do is fry it..

    The shutters are totally different from what I took out. They're rubber but I believe they'll fit ok. Merc's mini instructions said they will..rest assured I'll let you know one way or the other! Thanks to all of you and have a great holiday!

    Well I have some of that leftover from the lower shift cable installation last fall..so I'm good. If this repair is successful I'll do the other side this fall. If not then I'll be back.... LOL

    Thanks! I can do the file procedure, was going to wrap a sheet of 220 around a piece of hardwood flooring but I think the file is better..the new elbow has paint on the flange surface which I probably should sand off as well. I can probably find the hose fitting at a plumbing shop.

    I didn't have any luck clearing the crud out of the old elbow so I went to a merc shop and got a new elbow, shutters, exhaust hoses and gasket. I still need to find a brass fitting for the elbow hose as the old one would not come out of the elbow after 27 years... And as usual nobody has any...

    I'm dealing with much the same problem, I did cook the lower hose, the manifold is questionable but the elbow definitely scrap iron. I'm going to replace it with new hose and if it works I'll be lucky and when fall comes I will change all of the exhaust system. The other side can't be far behind..

    Shifter is turning the upper shift shaft when put in forward or reverse.

    It's the arm on the upper end of the shift shaft. It has a roller on it that engages with the cable connector. It can dis engage on it's own quite easily while installing the drive.
