    carburetor suspect problems

I have had ones that run decent but are hard to start. Seen it on a couple where I didn't realize spark wasn't perfect, replaced some parts and noticed a big improvement in how quickly they started. Seen this on an old 2 stroke Evinrude 15, my 65 GTO, and most recently when I repowered my boat...

engine swap need to find right prop

Agreed you need a different ratio drive. You can swap just the upper to a 1.98 /2.00 that the 3.0 used, Merc also makes a 2.40 drive but I think you need the whole drive as lower gears are different too. Would think if you went from the 1.47 drive that was likely in there to a 1.98 you would...

    Gear oil level

yep as long as reservoir is ok you are fine. The reservoir keeps the outdrive full. There is also a low level sensor that sounds the beep that goes off when you start the engine. The alarm will go off when oil pressure is too low ( the brief time when the engine starts) , engine over heats, or...

    carburetor suspect problems

Would make sure your ignition components are up to snuff. If ignition is good, the littlest bit of gas will fire off. Might also fatten up the idle screws or at least try adjusting them to see if it helps. Dont be intimidated by the carb they are inherently simple, just takes some experience...

    carburetor suspect problems

an electric choke does not need the hot exhaust gases to open a hot air choke does. Here is a short article on choke styles. https://www.carburetor-blog.com/knowledge-base/what-kind-of-choke-do-i-have/ an electric choke uses 12v to heat up a bimetal spring in choke housing when off the spring...

    Mercrusier MC 1 outdrive

Exactly as stated above - the later R/MR/Gen one drives will bolt up to the bell housing on a MC1 transom. You also can mix and match upper and lower units amongst them. It is correct some of the early inline engines with MC-1s used a shorter drive shaft that goes into the coupler. These can...

    carburetor suspect problems

The reason the choke is zip tied open is the aftermarket aluminum intake does not have the choke stove capability in the exhaust cross over. Quadra jets liek this use a divorced choke with a heated spring in the manifold. Someone removed this. A place like cliffs carbs should have An electric...

Is it possible to put the upper half of the sterndrive on first? Or do I need to put the whole drive on together?

You will have two issues doing it in halves- rotating the driveshaft to index with the coupler and aligning the shift shaft shoe between upper and lower. I used to move the front of my trailer up /down so that I can put the skeg on a boat and have the driveshaft be at right height to go in...

Float and needle and seat are probably hung up or not put together right, also measure fuel pressure. if too high bowl will over flow. When running look down the bore to see if fuel is weeping into bores off boosters at idle. If plugs are black just getting too much fuel, more advance probably...

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

Merc spec is 4-7 psi which is normal range for carbed engines for the last 65 years. He may have the wrong pump or cheap aftermarket pump that has too much pressure. Carter makes two universal fit marine pumps that put out 4-6 and 6-8 psi respectively. It’s what Michigan motorz supplies on their...
