    Gimbal Bearing Science

Greasing it when it’s running is a good idea just like jacking up & spinning trailer wheels when you grease em…it spreads the grease out optimally. Alternatively you could grease the gimble with the drive off and turning the inner race by hand…messy but you can feel how smooth the bearing is...

2020 3.5 HP merc only runs at half choke.

If I’d didn’t do this before but does it now, then either the idle or transition system in the carb is partly blocked. We had this with our Suzuki we bought from new. Dealer replaced carb same thing. Brought it back again service rep adjusted idle screw better but not perfect. After warrantee I...

Bravo 3 loud knocking/ticking Sound Video

I’d pick up a mechanic’s stethoscope pull the boat out of the water and keep probing areas till you find where it’s coming from…

    Water when pulling stern drive

I never had an Alpha drive but I think I'd glue that in with weatherstrip adhesive (yellow snot as it's called) let it dry and put a light coating of marine grease on the inner edge, it appears that the bearing carrier pushes against the seal, correct? And the paper gasket seals the outer edges...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

There is an older gent who cruises around here in an Auburn Speedster reproduction, it looks great except for the small block Chevy with flowmasters exhaust note lol. However the average person thinks it is the real thing...

    Happiest Day of Ownership !!!

It's the cost of property in NY....very few people here have inside storage for anything but a couple of cars...a house big enough to have that large of a garage, would likely have annual real estate taxes in excess of 20 grand. So you cover it outside, or sell everything and get the hell out...

    Happiest Day of Ownership !!!

I bought a Taylor Made custom cover for my boat about 15 years ago & built a frame for it so it won’t cave in under snow loads. Worked out pretty well all these years….

    Water when pulling stern drive

Stumpy's Fab Works makes a very nice one, I've been using it for about 10 years. Saved a LOT of money not paying for outdrive R&R every year. It paid for itself the first year.

    Happiest Day of Ownership !!!

Same here there’s always a list of things I want to do if I get through half of them I’m doing well lol. Next spring I should finally fix the rot in the starboard coaming panel and replace the old OMC remote control with the new Teleflex I bought…8-9 years ago!

    PSA on Winterization Antifreeze

If you mix the Sierra PG 50/50 it gives freeze protection down to -26*F, you can vary the mix as you see fit for your conditions. Use an antifreeze refractometer it’s easier to use & more accurate. Anything that gets hard like that you don’t want inside a cast iron engine or exhaust manifold...

    PSA on Winterization Antifreeze

I did the same test years ago with -50 & -60 and that’s why I used -100 which has a freeze point of like -45*F. Now I mix up some Sierra PG antifreeze with water 50/50. Less expensive & totally adequate for our coldest winter temps.

Rapid trailer jerk at higher speeds

Good to know, most people wouldn't think of that....

4 stroke air /fuel screw setting

You can do that on old carbed motors but anything with electronic control….don’t think so!

Rapid trailer jerk at higher speeds

Ok I had an intermittent (not frequent) jerking/vibration on my 07 Grand Cherokee that took me a while to figure out. Finally I realized it happens usually right after parking on a steep hill with the parking brake firmly applied. Then once smelled hot brake smell from driver side rear bake...

    Winterization Question

If it’s just the manifolds & the heat exchanger & raw water intake hose it’s not that hard to manually drain; to run in AF with a Volvo I’d add an electric pump to the winterizing tank to make sure the impeller doesn’t run dry, gravity feed doesn’t always work with engine mounted impellers

    Steering issues

Also take a look at the actuator & see if there are any leaks, that's pretty common. Any noise from the pump? That's a sign of low P/S fluid level and leaks are likely....

    350 mag mpi manifold/elbow temp

However, I did think that Merc designed those manifolds to maintain a certain temp, because otherwise the cats would be too cool to work. Since not that many people have done this, there is not much information on it and I bet that is why Merc will not provide that information (temps) they don't...
