OMC cobra outdrive drops out of gear

That, elevated engine temp due to the impeller not spinning fast enough

    Water in spark plugs

Agreed take off the exhaust manifolds first & test with acetone. Then go from there

    Water in spark plugs

The one piece manifolds have pretty small outlet holes and they can clog fairly easily. Here's a set of mine after 5.5 seasons in salt water. I had 3 sets of these on my engine and replaced them every 5-7 years which is pretty typical here. I then converted this engine over to the later style...

    Water in spark plugs

As Bondo said air pressure test the block/ heads first then remove exhaust manifolds and fill with acetone to check for leaks…. If you need new manifolds I did the 2 piece conversion with Barr aftermarket & V/P exhaust pipes & hoses. Fit perfect….

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

Yep I did that too. Got a couple spare 4.3 intakes in my garage in case the original rots out under the thermostat. Still solid when I checked last time I changed the stat. Salt water never forgets

    Proper Carburetor adjustment

However on a Volvo the exhaust is still raw water cooled even with closed cooling How did the water passages in the manifolds & elbows look? If they are starting to clog time to replace.

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

That one you linked at Summit is the right one. Not specifically marine like the pre Vortec is but I don’t think it matters like with head gaskets. I’d carefully check the torque first.

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

Remember you must use the Vortec gaskets if you change them. They are totally different.

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

just take your time & go real easy on those, the gaskets are fragile, I actually prefer the pre-vortecs like mine were you can use the thick Fel/Pro gaskets.

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

Use an inch pound torque wrench carefully just make sure they are at 11 ft lbs. but first see if you really see a water leak there. It looked that way to me in the pix. It’s possible that the gasket took a set & isn’t sealing. I have an inch pound low range torque wrench for jobs like that….

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

Check the tightness of your intake manifold bolts carefully

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

You will see oil vapors around the oil fill cap because these engines usually don't have a pvc valve to pull those into the intake manifold as on auto applications. What I see is perhaps a small water leak, the intake gasket can leak a bit there because there are water ports in the cyl heads...

Best wrench to remove 5.0 water separator filter

Boat companies don't really think about mechanics. You think that's bad, try replacing a steering actuator. That's really fun. I think I sweated out 5 lbs that day.

Best wrench to remove 5.0 water separator filter

Ah well yes I think engine heat makes them get stuck. I've been doing small block Chevy, Olds, Ford V8s, imports (Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda), Jeep inline 6, Chrysler Hemi filters for years never had one I couldn't get off. A good fitting cap wrench, or the Lisle jaw style works great.

    New Boat blues

Only thing I'd get now if going newer is a 4 stroke outboard. I will never have an EPA over-reach no one asked for this 700*F heat generator in the bilge of a boat that I own and maintain. Be very careful about buying one of these, the check engine lights will drive you out of your mind, just...

The 225/75-15 Load Range D tires I have on mine are rated at 2540 lbs each for a total of 5080 lbs, as far as tires. My axle/hubs/brakes are good for 6,000 and the springs (5 leaf) are good for 5700. Trailer has 4650 on the axle and 420 lbs on the tongue, total 5070 lbs. First time since I've...
