    Plugs fouling

A few years back I thought my QJet was too old to be rebuilt properly so I tried replacing it with a Holley 4160 that was jetted for the 4.3. Well had the same problem as the OP here. Rich running fouled plugs & calls to Holley tech support I tried everything they suggested. Finally in disgust I...

    5.0gi to 5.7 swap

Taking a wild guess, I'm thinking that the properly flashed ECM will have the injectors stay open longer, to allow for the .7 greater engine displacement of the 5.7 vs the 5.0. If I was going to put my old Quadrajet on a 5.7 vs the 4.3 I now have, for sure I'd have to re-jet it. Keep in mind the...

    Oil everywhere

Do you have remote oil filter mounts? Hoses OK? These are really convenient but they can leak.

    One manifold hot (5.0)

Here's a pair of pre-vortec intakes, these are for the 4.3 but the 5.0 is similar. You can see the cross over port between the 3 intake ports. There is a matching port in the cyl head to feed in the exhaust gas. The tin cover is to prevent oil from burning off the hot cross over passage. This...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

The idea then is to heat the area under the carb, to better atomize fuel. But, doesn't explain why the starboard side runs hotter still! I know for sure that the standard GM cast iron intakes for the Vortec engines do not have an exhaust cross over like my old Pre-Vortec does. This must be a...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

no EGR valve on marine engines, that I have ever seen. If your thermostat has those poppet valves, I'm wondering about them... an obvious explanation would be if those springs don't have equal tension you won't have equal flow.... see....springs, poppet valves etc...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

from the end of your last thread, that tube that connects the intake and exhaust manifold got me very curious so I did some snooping around.... https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31842/12834/90 https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31842/12834/160 OK you got me curious...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

That, is very curious, you have a Vortec engine and there isn't supposed be an exhaust crossover in the intake like on the Pre-Vortec engines. I'm wondering just what is the purpose of that?!

    5.0gi to 5.7 swap

You have 7/10s more displacement to feed so the ECM has to be calibrated differently. On the old days you changed carb jets & metering rods for the same reason

    Kinda Clueless in South Jersey

Might want to stay away from marinas & find a local auto machine shop that will do a marine build. They can evaluate your current engine and decide if it’s reparable or not. Some can build you a marine reman engine right in their shop. Might be better than long distance mail order where if...

    4.3 Carb v 4.3MPI

Vapor lock is one problem I never had with the 4bbl Quadrajet but I’m also at sea level I have heard it’s more of a problem at high altitudes where the barometric pressure is lower…

1999 5.0L MerCruiser Exhaust Manifold Temperature Question

One will always be a bit warmer than the other, for one thing the water flow to each side is never 100% equal and another it depends on how the boat sits on the trailer or in the water, if one side is lower that gets more water so it will run cooler. Mine sits lower on port side on the trailer...

Volvo Penta 855932 Prestolite 7801A advance springs

What you are going to have to do is search based on your engine/carb combination, so if its an AQ 271 I'm thinking it is a 5.7 with a 4bbl carb, correct? I don't have part numbers you're going to have to look for parts for similar engines (OMC or Mercruiser) that used the same Prestolite...

Volvo Penta 855932 Prestolite 7801A advance springs

Try marine engine.com, look up a similar OMC engine…. I have found a couple of spare Prestolite distributors for my old 4.3 V6 complete with the springs etc on eBay…. If you use aftermarket springs see if you can find a hot rod shop with a distributor machine (very old school) they may be able...

    Dual battery shut off wiring

On most inboard engines the common simply goes to the large positive terminal on the starter solenoid & there is usually another wire that goes from that terminal up to the B+ terminal on the alternator. If yours is wired this way then no need to add additional wiring. That Cole-Hersee switch is...
