    Is there a way to test a CDI unit? (696-85540-12 - 1986 8hp 2cy)

service manual should have the specs for the input and out put of the CDI. but you will need the proper peak reading meter made for these ignition systems. or you can buy an adapter and use you regular meter

How hard is it to replace a broken water tube?

I will bite, but I have never replaced one or needed to before. I would think that the power head would need to come off to get to that tube on the upper end. should be a rubber seal up there that the tube slides into. probably good idea to replace that also look at a parts break down to get...

    1998 DT115

you need to know if the compression is good on all cylinders, is it? you need to know if all spark plugs are getting good spark while spinning the motor over to start, and are they hitting at the correct time? If and only if these things are good, then you are left with a fuel problem. no...

1990 Yamaha 250 VX 76. Power drops off.

testing things is better than throwing parts at a problem to see what the problem is. if pressure does not stay in spec, you have something to chase. apparently all of the money you have sent replacing parts was in vain from what you have told us

1990 Yamaha 250 VX 76. Power drops off.

but have you monitored the fuel pressure while this is happening at the fittings to the carbs? sounds to me like there is not enough fuel in the carb bowls so it cannot spool up or the main jets are plugging up

1990 Yamaha 250 VX 76. Power drops off.

a complete model # would help find what motor you have . I do not see a 1990 VX250 listed the 1990 250STXD I see has carbs, Fuel pressure would be a good thing to check if you think the carbs are running out of fuel.

    Low RPM on 2002 F9.9ELRA

well apparently I was wrong on the WOT RPM all you can do is get a smaller prop to up the RPM. too much load on a small motor. a 50 hp would be a lot better on that boat

2000 Yamaha 115 4 stroke won’t go to full throttle

testing is better that just throwing parts at the motor to see if that helps.

    Low RPM on 2002 F9.9ELRA

I thought 4 strokes were suppose to run 6K not 4-5k. has this set up ever ran higher RPM? 16 ft boat running only a 9.9 hp is under powered. what is the boat HP rating

2000 Yamaha 115 4 stroke won’t go to full throttle

what is the rail pressure doing when it falls on it's face? have you used a timing light to see what spark timing is doing when the problem shows up? what is a smoke test of the fuel system?

Yamaha 150 4 stroke - change of rotation

props are a lot easier to find than lower units, and I see no reason for the motor to be louder or choppier, what ever that is

    spark plugs

back in the good old days I think they put resister plugs on cars motors to help reduce the radio noise I am not sure why they went to R plugs on boat motors

    1985 Yamaha 9.9SK

points worked so well that even when you set them with a feeler gauge you still had to check and readjust with a dwell meter to get the set properly. also had to replace them every year and maybe even more often if the cap went bad and caused the points to arc too much and pit. not to mention...
