Prop for hole shot water skiing

When starting a skier, use full tabs, until boat and skier are on plane. Put most of the boat's live load as far forward as possible, for start. Move them back if it can be done safely. Then raise tabs. If you have a bowrider, and it is full of people, watch for the bow to catch a wave and...

Fuel tank size on 92 Sylvan 16' Sea Troller

If you can get access to the top of the tank, they usually have a capacity on them. Measuring it is another way. One would think it is at least 18 gal.

J150EXECD No spark w/ regulator connected

Well, good luck. Mine rusted on the "face" of it, that touches the cooling water. I expected it to be made of brass or SS. Not sure what it was made of. Be careful not to scratch it. Maybe it is epoxy over steel.

    Motor well boot sealing

Yours does need replacing. I do not have a better ideal. Use some silicone on the base of the boot, cut the boot hole larger if necessary to get cables, steering cable, fuel and electric line thru it. Install a cable tie around boot and lines to help it seal somewhat.

J150EXECD No spark w/ regulator connected

Unfortunately I would recommend that you replace with an OEM part. I have had the aftermarket VRs rust out on me. Not sure why that happened.

    Regular fuel

Gee, alcohol in gasoline is no issue. No backfiring, nothing. It runs just as well as straight gasoline. If you folks want to raise the price of fuel by adding seafoam, or other additives, it is your $$. However, I think you are giving away your money for no benefit....

    Control lever removal?

On some of those older controls, the handle pulled straight out, for throttle only. Is that what you meant?

    150 hp bogging down

Clean your main jets and see if that helps. Remember there are six of those. They are located on the sides of the bowls. You motor may also have a power jet, whatever that is. It looks to be on the bottom of the carb. Probably worth cleaning as well. Not sure if their are one or two...

J150EXECD No spark w/ regulator connected

The service manual for that motor does not mention that subject. I would put an ohmmeter on both wires of the VR and see if it is shorted to ground. Unplug the VR first. Both the grey and purple wires go to other components, and you want to prove the VR is the issue. Try a hand impact...

    Mariner controller

What you need should not be hard to find. Get on a Mercury site and find the control for your exact motor. Match year and HP. Mariner and Mercury should be the same, except for paint. Then you can search for aftermarket controllers based on the OEM control part number. The key item is the...

    Control lever removal?

That does not look like a control from '88. Looks like one from '74 or earlier, and heavily used in salt water. Put a hand impact driver on that screw in the center of the handle base and see if it will come off. You might price out a new control, just to be ready. Obviously pick one for the...

    1150 Link & Sync Question

Some tachs will show the RPM when the engine was turned off. They usually zero when power is applied. If you remove the cowling and pull off the telltale hose on the water jacket cover, the water should stream out of the engine at max volume for the elbow. If not, you have water pump issues.

1974 mercury 2 stroke water pump operation?

An overheat horn might work. A water temp gauge doesn't work on that motor, because it runs dead cold at idle and warmer as you accelerate. Not sure what effects your climate has on the impeller. We change 'em every few years here in NJ.

    Power Outlet stopped working

Almost every boat has a fuse panel. They are usually under the dashboard. I presume your boat has lights and a bilge pump? Trace one of those wires back from the lights and see where it goes after it passes thru the switch. Some boats have circuit breakers directly above the switches. These...

    Heavy Torque on start up

Harry, I do not understand the question. If she doesn't pull at speed, there is no need to adjust the anode. If she pulls during acceleration, trim up a bit.

Questions on recent purchase of Mercury OB

That motor will run about 50::1 gas to oil. So if it is a quart, it will last for 12 gallons of gasoline or a bit more. Those oil reservoirs usually have a level sensor to tell you when they get low. Just get a service manual for that motor. Much better than an owners manual and will; have...

    Small hole in hull.

Make sure the area is clean, usually by sanding it. Wipe with acetone. Marine tex or even polyester marine putty will work fine.

    How much trim?

You can trim a lot if motor stays at idle. Basically as long as prop and water intakes are covered. At higher speed the outdrive must be more vertical, within the brackets of the outdrive, or the universal joints will start to fail.
