    You need to tear it doen to see what is damaged. Low road take it local machine shop , as outlined quite likely turn the crank and resize the rods do a valve job , may need new pistons if bores are out of round and require boring. high road, get a reman or new base engine swap the components...

    On the intake stroke it will pull air in via a spark plug hole same as it would via the intake valve. on compression stroke it will expel air out the spark plug hole… so yes normal

    Who rebuilt it ? Had an issue with a rebuild years ago machinist resized the big end of the rods incorrectly (at a slight angle) so rod bearings were binding on crank … wouldn’t turn over with starter

    No not that speed at 2800 rpm I think you just want to know the prop is such that you can get to the upper end of the wot rpm range for both of your altitude situations likely u will need different props for different situations F lmk

    Would think probably temp sensor. Seems like it isnt thinking its cold and needs to richen mixture . also would check two common mpi issues IAC valve and the crab style dist cap may be contributing .

    Hard to know that unless you tell us…you intimated that you had to force the engine to turn over with a large torque wrench… so it spun freely you just wanted to see how much torque to turn over. is compression ok only other thought on hearing a ping is if a valve is hung up.

    You sure the engine was locked up? would think the gimbal bearing or u joints would be a likely culprit especially if water was in bellows. would be worth pulling the drive to check them given what you are describing

    My 2003 vintage drive had sealed aka non greaseable u joints Could also be gimbal bearing as well which may be greaseable from outside of gimbal housing If it’s not terrible use it through the season and change at winterization pull the drive inspect for water in bellows check alignment...

    Check the engine coupler and drive Coupler could be broken Drive could have shredded upper gears or broken vertical driveshaft Would be leaning towards coupler based on symptoms look for signs of burning rubber at rear of engine as coupler connects engine to drive input shaft

    Sounds just like my 5.0 dont worry about it. Might be exhaust flapper nothing with engine. These pushrod V engines are not super quiet. Either turn up the radio, add more throttle, or drink more beer. Any combo of the three makes noise go away….

    Yes dropping pitch 2” will be basically the same as swapping a 1.62 drive. go through all the checks suggested and verify tach if all is good drop pitch .
