    Transom patch

What were they made of? Only Wood boats actually Float, Fiberglass, Metal, Cement Boats can't(they remain on the water by Displacing an Amount of Water equal to their Weight), and are required by Law, to have adequate Buoyancy added to keep a swamped boat from sinking. Some boats use Sealed...

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

Tinkering can result in melted Pistons, broken Rings, etc. Get the Manual, a genuine Factory Manual for that Powerhead.

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

You have to determine what gear ratio you have, before you or anyone can running the numbers as to what a 23" prop will do at 5000rpm, as at one time the motor was allegedly a 200, and 150 was placed on it. The two engines normally have different Gear Ratios. However, the Gearcase might not be...

Rapid trailer jerk at higher speeds

Marine Plywood is best. Others will say Exterior Grade is just as good, but I won't agree with them.

    Transom patch

If you got all the rotten wood out, you could just replace what you cut, covering the joints with several layers of Glass, each new layer a couple of inches larger than the last, and a couple across the entire Transom and overlapping on the Sides. The repair is strong till the glass ends, which...

    72 Mercury 500 No Spark

On the port side is the exhaust cover. You really don't want to try removing that. On average more than 1/2 the Bolts break when there are attempts to remove them.

Remove that water jacket cover and this is what you will see. That engine does not have a removable Cylinder head

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

The nuts that hold the carbs on look like they have been wrenched on many times, so I suspect the High Fuel burn has been an ongoing issue for while. As the powerhead has been changed, and apparently from a 200 to a 150, makes for some Questions. Was the complete Powerhead swapped, carbs and...

    Thrust to Hull

Welcome to iboats Well, it depends on what kind of an Inboard it was. An old style Inboard, where the Prop Shaft runs through the Keel of the Boat, the Thrust would be transferred through to the Engine Mounts. An I/O, that would depend on the Brand, and the Year of the Engine. Some like the...

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

Oh oh, we might have a FrankinMerc, or one where a previous owner stuck a 150 Cowl on to hide a 200, from casual inspection(some States get really goofy about Overpowering), or to have the fastest 150 on the lake, likely both

    72 Mercury 500 No Spark

You're Correct, the 72 was 3 cylinder. I have the 72 Brochure on the shelf next to my desk. Damn it you caught me again;) The 3s never were in the top 10, unless you are referring to Poor Running/Performance.

The 69s, had the nicest Cowl Decal that Mercury ever had If the Lower unit came off of a 4 cylinder 65hp, 75hp, 80hp or 85hp, it will have the proper gear ratio for any of those engines. Hopefully the shaft lengths match and are correct for you boat Myself, I like the post 78 cases better...

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

Motors always ran/run great till they don't. Well since parts are described as things, and neither you or your friend appear to be familiar with these engines, and what makes them tick. I suggest you don't go near them with tools that can adjust things. Assuming things has lead to many of these...

Carbs are part of it, so is Spark Advance. It the timing advancing as the throttle lever is pushed? Is the Primary Pickup Timing Correct? Its the Max Advance set correctly Back to the carbs, are all fully closed at Idle? Are the floats set properly? Are the idle mixture screws(if the carbs have...
