Mercruiser 5.0 Won’t Reach Operating Temp

As a sanity check - Have you verified the 120 is indeed accurate with an IR thermometer also the OEM merc thermostat gasket has rivets in it to ensure the housing sensor is properly grounded to manifold. Can cause issues if a aftermarket gasket with out rivets is used I think you can check the...

    5.0 Mercruiser Problems

The tks is an enrichment module that lets extra fuel in for warm up. It should hiss until it warms up at like 135 f or so. It was meant to replace an automatic choke so folks who don't drive carbureted cars and dont know how to set a choke can start it easily... IMHO a dumb system when two pumps...

Can the base of engine work? Two to bolts under engine are rusted and can

That drive has a dog clutch which will make a clunk when it shifts normally. Best to shift firmly and quickly into gear. Most likely it is normal

    Purchasing in this market

Nice looking boat, I think you did the smart move. I prefer my boats pre scratched anyways.... I assume one of you has a GTO given the user name ? I have a 65

Rochester 2 jet running rich before and after rebuild

Did it work ok? This would be a great solution if the quality was decent.

    Still no power

You have covered a lot already- I assume you checked the timing including total advance? Is the spark strong on a spark gap tester. What do the plugs look like as AD mentioned going lean is a potential issue given your sypmtoms. I know the carb was gone through but if it is lean I would start...

port side exhaust elbow over heating.

No it doesn’t prevent that it is only to have warm exhaust manifolds theoretically preventing condensation during warm up

port side exhaust elbow over heating.

You don’t have them on your set up. My 2004 has them basically it feeds water to risers and manifolds separately risers cold incoming water , manifolds only get hot water after thermostat opens. Works fine on mine

Did you unplug the sensors on bottom of lube bottle too?

port side exhaust elbow over heating.

I think the flappers are below this in the top of the wye pipe. Does your thermostat housing have the T with plastic balls/poppet valves ? these fan pass too much water to one side or the other if hung up .

    5.0 Mercruiser Problems

Start with basics- remove fuel filter and see if there is anything but fresh clean gasoline in there. Is the choke opening fully or do you have a TKS carb? If tks is the enrichment module kicking on and off like it should ?What do the plugs look like now that you changed them? Set ignition...

    Top speed?

Agreed - also had a 17 ft with 3.0 used a 16" 4 blade for skiing , 18" 4 blade for general use. To op I would repair the prop you have on it or get similar to get a baseline on performance and WOT rpm before experimenting with props. Most shops are like $80-100 to repair a 3 blade AL prop

port side exhaust elbow over heating.

No the down elbow is single wall, water and exhaust mix at the riser elbow. Take it off you may have clogging at the outlet of the riser elbow and perhaps the water isnt cooling all of it. Does that manifold and elbow stay cool otherwise ?

Making sure I purchased the correct coil for a 1996 5.7L

yeah hopefully just a head gasket between 5/7 but could be valves if risers were leaking back into cylinder

    Need some Help

this is the easiest solution. For years I used the tag off my dads sailboat trailer never had an issue. Also agree that boat is a lot older than 2000's before you invest a bunch of time did you check it for leaks? Older riveted boats tend to leak and can be a pita to fix
