    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

A few odds and ends today . . . I put a top coat of barrier coat (Interprotect 2000E) on the keel I also coated the rudder with barrier coat, as this too will be painted with anti-fouling paint. I also did some work in the cabin. . . There are cockpit drains that are somewhat...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Thanks, Ned. Today was 'Keel Trunk' day . . . I checked out the keel trunk a bit more and did some sanding. There were cracks pretty much all the way around the base of the trunk where it meets the bottom of the hull. Gelcoat cracks really, some areas the gelcoat had chipped away exposing...

Hull Painting Update: The gelcoat is pretty well shot on this boat and not something that will just buff up with compounding, etc. Some places have worn down through the gelcoat due to exposure and wear. I recall that when I power washed the boat last Fall, the water came off of the boat a...

    Screwing into fiberglass

Often new speakers will come with clips that look like these . . . Which will allow you to drill a hole the size of the screw. The clip will go along the edge of the opening, over the screw hole so you have something holding the screw other than the bare fiberglass, which will tend to fracture.

Weekend update: I did some finish work on the keel and began work on the hull. Put in a piece of plastic tubing to act as a grommet for the keel cable. Additionally, I had noticed earlier that the was a 'extra' hole in the keel and I was not sure it had a purpose. I had covered the hole with...

Scott, I'd need to fasten the Delrin as adhesives may not work (right?). I'm just thinking about how I would do this. Here is the keel trunk as viewed from inside the boat. The pivot bolt is at the forward area of the keel and right behind the bolt are lead bars (as additional ballast)...

-9 degrees F this morning . . . wicked cold, but I may try to do some additional work on the keel today, if I can get the garage heated up a bit. I made a few diagrams to show the 'keel clunk' issue and my plan to resolve it. Here is a cut-away diagram of my boat, showing the keel trunk and...

It has been a while since I updated things, of course, that is because I have not done much with the keel over the past 4 weeks. Today, I did the epoxy fairing and fiberglassing of one side of the keel. I will let it cure and then do the other side within the next week or so. Here are a few...

Driving Through (or around) Snowmaggedon 2016 ???

Arrived at the FIL's house (with dog) at about 11:00 am. So, mission accomplished, and on schedule. The Admiral and I catch a flight back to Boston tomorrow, so that was a time consideration. We'll enjoy the sun for a little while. :thumb:

Driving Through (or around) Snowmaggedon 2016 ???

This weekend happens to be when the Admiral and I drive her father's dog to the winter home in Florida. The trip from MA to FL usually takes 2-1/2 days, and the dog travels in luxury (of course). This year, the snow forecast is presenting quite a challenge, as we usually travel the I-95...

The epoxy 'stuff' arrived today . . . Unfortunately, the weather has turned cold again. So, it will be a bit challenging to get the temps up in the garage so that I can finish the keel. Maybe the weather will break a bit in a few days. I'll just have to wait and see. :)

    Advice/question on boat for sale

I just noticed another thing from looking at the Ad listing . . . Looks like blister rash behind the step in the hull :noidea: So, another issue to consider. The interior looks nice . . . very clean, but the outdrive and these blisters will give you quite a challenge.

I'm going to see what I can find at the hardware store to use as a bushing. If I did go with nylon and it wore out, at leat I could replace it fairly easily without removing the keel, etc. I coated the other side with the Interprotect 2000E last night and kept the heater going all night...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

I applied the first coat of epoxy paint to one side of the keel. The paint is Interlux Interprotect 2000E, which a 2-part epoxy paint and is commonly used as a barrier coat for fiberglass hulls below the water line. It also is advertised as an excellent bare metal primer, and I can attest...

Quick Update: I moved the keel from the dolly up onto my workmate so that I could put a heater below it and keep it warm(er) in my garage. One of the sides of the keel has a 'bulge in it as you can see in the picture below. The other side is flat. It is about 1/4" and there is not too...

Update: I have the keel down to bare metal. Here are a couple of pictures. Not a lot of metal loss, so it should be pretty straight forward to get it faired and smooth. I am thinking about putting a layer of light glass just to give the coating some strength. There is one area on what...

    Oh what a feeling, to fix a Toyota . . .

Yup, very cheap. . . I got the new speakers installed. It turned out the original head unit did have a bad channel. So, I am using the one I got on eBay. here are a few picture from the past 2 days . . . The rear seat and rear deck disassembled to access the speakers. Demolition of...

    Oh what a feeling, to fix a Toyota . . .

2009 Corolla S . . . my kid's car that we bought new on her 16th b-day. She announced recently that the radio was not working properly. So, I checked it out and it appeared to be the head unit. Virtually no sound, right front speaker not getting anything, etc. I ordered a used refurb unit...

Talking about Solid State Drives (SSD)

$99 is an awesome price . . . I am wondering if I can get something that would fit my mid-2009 MacBookPro . . . the drive is getting pretty full and I had to dump a bunch of stuff to free up some space. Plus a 6 year old laptop drive is probably on the downside of life expectancy. :noidea:
