Boat swamped, let's see if we can get it running...

no i think there is a cavity in front of the driveshaft in the coupler. Will not end up in bellows. I usually give mine 3-4 pumps in the fall was still greased when i removed the drive

    4 to a 2 barrel carb

As outlined you should be able to get and adapter and adapt the rochester or mercarb two bbl to the manifold, but might require rejetting the carb. How bad di the PO screw up the carb? If you have a good core I would recommend having it properly rebuilt either locally or someplace like this...

    Water in oil

Probably more a matter of what cylinders exhaust valve was open when you stopped it. I do believe the water in the cylinder will slowly leak past the rings into the oil. If you test the cooling system with air pressure and it holds you know the leak is from the manifolds To elbow joint...

    Water in oil

Yes water is likely leaking back into cylinders. Would pressure test the cooling system

Ran outdrive without lube! Bad sound.

If you are getting it rebuilt for the cost of an SEI upper he is being very fair on price.

    Truck cam with captain's choice?

Not sure what the original engine was in terms of initial and total timing. I think merc vortec 5.7s will have 10 deg initial and total of 30-32 ish by 2800 or 3 k rpm.

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

Agreed . I have never seen a 3.0 with separate canister fuel filter from the factory. My folks had a 91 seray with a 3.0 that was passed down to me. I changed the filter that was a sintered stone for the first time when the boat like 18-20 years old … spring in bottom of housing Was rusted out …

1995 Searay 5.7 GM winterizing mods..

Unfortunately the idea i have is to lull the engine and retap or heilcoil correctly. Can you start the tap in there? If not likely plug or nipple is busted off in there.… dont think they make expansion plugs that small

Blowby through vent tube? Mercruiser 3.7

X 2 on this and in post 1 OP states he used break in oil and followed a reasonably proper break in regime.

Blowby through vent tube? Mercruiser 3.7

Not enough oil comes out the vent and into the carb. take plugs withyou to the machine shop, they are going to say it was lean , but your plugs are not lean at all… in fact oil and rich… the plugs look like the ones out of my 65 gto. I did a backyard hone re ring, bearing, new cam, valve job…...

    Boat wont turn over…Safety Switch?

Yep, if you hear the starter engage and click then look at engine/gimbal/ujoints/drive being locked up, but thats not whats happening here

want to run my engine out of the boat.

Could have been the key switch or neutral safety switch. What Bondo recommends is a very good start clean and tighten all connections. Under the dash often times 12v supply to the switch and 12v back to ignition on are often daisy chained through the gauges- lots of potential for loose...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

I understand pulling the kill switch at rpm will create hydrolock potential… both are killing the ignition…and i think engine can spin backwards when it sputters .

A couple of quick Edelbrock ?'s

Have you verified your fuel pressure ? If you intermittently have issues with flooding from fuel bowl would rule that out. In the 6 years I've had my 1409 on my boat and a similar auto version on an old car never had a issue with the floats

want to run my engine out of the boat.

Someone might have used this universal harness like this cant tell from your picture https://www.hardin-marine.com/p-79746-universal-engine-harness.aspx So it may have already been rewired...

want to run my engine out of the boat.

Yes it would have had a cannon plug from new. Dont think your engine is a 1977, it would have been labeled a 140 unless they swapped the '85 valve cover ... so who knows what is there. I think you can buy both sides of the cannon plug with pigtails...
