    The bulb is a simple manual pump.----Sounds like the pump on the motor is not working.----The bulb does not need to stay hard when motor is running.

    The 88 is not on the list for 1998 production year.----And 1998 was last year of the crossflow design.

    The wiring tells me it is a 1995 or older.-----If you just bought it , post the compression test values.----Install a new impeller before your first venture out into the ocean.-----Not sure about those plug wires either.----Are they wire core ?

    I do not believe a 1973 powerhead is a direct swap onto a 235 HP midsection.====Research to be done on the parts pages by you.

    That screw in the picture has to do with the lock for the starter.----Recoil should only work with motor in neutral.-----Do not adjust anything on this motor if you are NOT sure of it or the results !!!

    ??---He would know about newer bushings that have a o-ring groove to help keep it in place.

    The o-ring inside can be replaced in 3 ways without damage to housing.----Pull bushing out after running a 5/16-NC tap in for 3 threads.-----Using the factory tool to drive it out ( I have 4 of them )----Or believe it or not you can remove / replace o-ring without removing the bushing.----And...

    There is a groove in the housing.----There is a bevel on the factory circlip.----Ring only fits one way.----This is simpler than you are making it.

    I try to point out that some of thee older motor really well built , easy to to troubleshoot and repair.----Some folks simply do not understand.----What is your opinion on the design of Mercury lower unit , with special tools required ?
