    Prop shopping

I like the Turning Point 4 blade props. They have two sets of different style blades, which work well in my heavy 21 footer. You might research them.

1991 mercury 150 outboard black max

You might repost this in the Mercury OB forum. They will ask you for compression numbers and spark on all 6 cylinders.

Anybody ever hear of this one?

Is that a v6? If so, idle pickup timing is when carbs are still closed but ready to open. The timing should be 0-9* ATDC. Max spark advance s/b 21* BTDC. If you are rebuilding a motor, a factory service manual is a must, I would think.

See if SEI makes a CR gearcase for your motor.

    Prop hub slipping?

A prop hub is a sleeve or rubber between the brass prop hub and the prop housing. It is made to slip, if the prop hits something. It does often have residual friction, even after it slips initially. It is not like a shear (drive) pin, where once it snaps, the prop turns free, If you have a...

    shallow launch

An OB will be easier to launch. First of all it is at least 600# lighter than the I/O, so the stern will not sink as deep. Second the OB can be tilted up higher than the I/O, so the OD has less chance of dragging or catching on the bottom of the lake. If the stern of the boat or outdrive...

    Prop cavitation

Cavitation is when the prop spins so hard that a vacuum is created behind the blade. This vacuum can erode the blades and is unusual. Ventilation is when a prop suck air in from the surface. It can also pit the blades somewhat, and is quite common, especially in turns. A change in thrust...

OK, when you drill the bottom holes, see what the condition of the shavings are. Some think you have a bad transom. The shavings will help confirm/deny that.

Spun prop hub: Replacement or buy new?

It is smart to have two props, in case one fails during a boating trip. In your case, if the prop is good, have it rehubbed and buy a new modular hub prop as well. Get a spare prop hub too. You need wrenches to change the prop as well, or just go for towing insurance.

    1971 Mercury inline 6 135 hp motor

Squirt some 50::1 fuel into the carb throats, close the choke manually and crank her, cold start lever up. If she won't fire, suspect an ignition issue. Is the engine wiring harness good? Most are very bad by this time.

Do you have any bolts on the lower part of the transom clamp? Normally you would have 4 bolts, spread out evenly, two in a top hole and two in a bottom hole. I see 2 bolts in the top holes of the transom clamp on the port side.

1979 1150 thunderbolt merc drive shaft

A 2::1 gear case ratio is standard for an IL6 motor. An 850 usually has a lower gear ratio. You can check it easy, by turning the flywheel exactly 2 full turns. See if the prop turns 1 full turn or less. I would expect 35MPH out of your boat/motor, but that is just an average.

    Motor swap

The mechanical throttle and shift cables should work fine, as will fuel and steering. The electrical will work if they are the same style. The older electrical had a quick disconnect plug that was on the outside of the starboard side of the motor. The newer style was an internal round plug...

1979 1150 thunderbolt merc drive shaft

You should check your compression and examine the color of the spark plugs, to make sure all are firing. I would expect a bit better top speed. Are you trimming the motor up to achieve max top speed?

    Old propeller problems

Gee, most prop OEMs have prop calculators. Simply punch boat type, engine and outdrive type and they will suggest one of their props and hubs. So Michigan Wheel, Solas, Turning Point are good starters. V-P might be one to check out as well.

    High Tide Fuel Tank

Usually those compartments drain to the bilge, as it is very hard to get a watertight seal with silicone. The fuel tank itself is vented. that compartment doesn't need to be.

    Bolster seat

A lot of captain's chairs have built-in bolsters. You can flip them up and sit on it. Your helm seat is likely available on the web, so you could look it up and see it's features. If you do not have that, department stores such as Wallyworld have universal cushions, which may be close in size...
