Why does the 4.3 not rev higher if it's oversquare?

It’s a pushrod OHV Chevrolet whose basic design dates back to 1955 with the 265 cu in V8. They were not designed to be high rpm engines; with a few exceptions like the 302 and 350 cu in Z28 versions.

    Water when pulling stern drive

did the grease come out looking rusty? If so I'd replace for sure and replace the gimble bearing as a matter of course. years back I had one bellow leak and at the time my mechanic (I wasn't doing all the I/O maintenance yet) really greased them up and they are still fine all these years...

    Bellows full of grease/oil

yep I'd figure on at least changing the gimble bearing, if this was fresh water you may be able to pump out the milky grease from your u joints, if you see rusty grease coming out of them though they should be replaced. You do not want a u joint failure on an I/O that can cause catastrophic...

some useful information on 5200, 6,000 and 7,000 lb axles (bearing/hub differences)

http://blog.easternmarine.com/bearings-for-5-2-6-7k-axles/ I recently upgraded the 3500 lb axle on my old single axle Load Rite to a 6000 lb axle built for me by Champion Trailers (as was the previous axle). I always wondered what the differences were between 5200 lb and 6000 lb axles was since...

1994 OMC 5.0 EFI no start

I might (carefully) unplug the computer connectors and fuel pump relays and dry everything out with a hairdryer (low heat). I re-animated my old iPhone 6 that got too damp this summer that way and it still works!

    Another winterization question

As I said in an earlier post it’s like trailer leaf springs. If you don’t spray regularly with corrosion x or similar they will rust bad in a few seasons here in the salt. If you spray 2x a year they will look good even after 10 seasons. So you flush your engine at the end of the season manually...

    Fuel Problem

I think that’s what my mechanics were taking about, warpage causing a vacuum leak

    Fuel Problem

I recall my mechanics (these were some of the best OMC mechanics around) talking about certain OMC carbs that were prone to warpage, not sure if that's the case here though. That's one area where an inboard or I/O is simpler than a carbed outboard, I can't imagine having SIX carbs to deal with...

    Exhaust Elbow Fit Problem

It almost looks as if the elbows are too long to mate with the Y pipe. Back when I replaced the heads on my 4.3 I also had to change the exhaust since I was on my last set of OMC bat wings. I REALLY wanted to convert to the Merc dry joint system because it is a better design no doubt. But the...

Don S Winterization link not working

If you wait to pull it when an “issue” arises that “issue” can wind up costing a grand or more due to a leaking bellows. Even in fresh water never removing an outdrive can result in one that….can’t be removed! Without paying a small mechanic to jam himself into the bilge and cut the driveshaft...

Don S Winterization link not working

On the OMC Cobra remember there are 3 drain plugs on the pivot housing (the part of the transom mount that the drive bolts to) that should be removed and rodded out to drain ant trapped water. One on the port side and 2 on the starboard side. Have to tilt the drive up a bit to see them. Water...

    Another winterization question

About the other question I like to drain and backfill because: You know it’s totally drained AF will not be diluted You can leave the AF in to reduce internal corrosion, that’s the whole point of using AF, and in later Mercruiser manuals that’s how they say to do it. If you are located where it...

    Another winterization question

They pretty much always have a cooler in line with the raw water intake hose, sometimes behind the engine right where the raw water intake hose comes out of the transom mount. If they are mounted vertically or diagonally they may self drain but if it’s mounted horizontally they have to be...

Ted I know you’re familiar with ocean conditions being from Cape Cod however I know LI Sound can get quite dicey depending upon the winds and tides. If you do decide to go that way check out U of CT’s my sound website they have weather buoys across LI Sound giving real time wind and wave...

Ahh with a FWC engine your heat exchanger (expensive to replace) has raw water in one half of it and must be drained as does the raw water intake hose!
