    up to you but depending on the shape of the transom it may be easier to raise the transom by filling in the deperession and it will provide added security to swaping in a heavy chop

    normally the cavitation plate lines up with the bottom of the boat transom so this is not a short shaft ...better to long than to short but not matched for sure.

    my only issue I had with a 7.5hp & pressure tank is that a pin hole (rust) caused 5 gal to leak and fortunately got dump out the boat which was tilted back with the plug removed. the lawn suffered major..total destruction. I switched it to a pump and modern tank....my 75hp ETEC...

    remove the starter assembly (3 bolts) remove the small plate on top of the flywheel and look inside if coils are all cracked...time to get new ones...points etc... to refurbish this a a great hobby ( be carefull ...very addictive once you enjoy the outcome)
